cazenove+loyd

To mark its 30th anniversary this year, cazenove+loyd, curators of luxury tailor-made travel, has commissioned Globetrender, the UK's leading travel trend forecasting agency, to produce a new luxury travel trends report alongside a new set of concept itineraries.

Titled Travelling with Purpose: Milestone Motivations and Luxury Travel Trends, this pioneering 'post-demographic' and age-inclusive trend report looks beyond demographics to focus on psychographics, categorising common life events according to seven Milestone Motivations. Each of these presents an opportunity to mark the occasion with a tailor-made holiday and is paired with a trend that cazenove+loyd believes will play a pivotal role in the future of luxury travel.

Additionally, cazenove+loyd has curated an inspiring itinerary to run alongside each trend that showcases how its Destination Experts can transform any motivation into an extraordinary travel experience.

Nabila Richardson, Marketing Director of cazenove+loyd, commented: “Up until now, many companies looking to the future of travel have focused on the under-40s, but at cazenove+loyd we believe that every generation is relevant. And as people get older, the desire to mark certain life milestones with extraordinary travel experiences has become more pronounced.

“Since the pandemic, we have observed a 40% increase in requests for 'Carpe Diem Celebrations', for example, to mark 50th, 60th or 70th birthdays. 'Radical Sabbaticals', meanwhile, are not only of interest to Millennials – Gen X and Boomers are now taking career breaks and gap years instead of waiting for retirement to pursue their dreams.

“We have therefore devised a set of seven new trend-based concept itineraries to run alongside these Milestone Motivations, available on our website. In addition to cazenove+loyd's expertise in bespoke luxury travel, we strive to deliver fresh inspiration to prospective clients before they contact us.”

MILESTONE MOTIVATIONS

In the new trend report, cazenove+loyd examines how these Milestone Motivations help inform people's travel decisions, and how they can provide bespoke planning and itinerary ideas for clients throughout the entirety of their life's journey. While many travel companies focus on the behaviour of certain demographics, cazenove+loyd recognises that Milestone Motivations can apply to people of any age.

Jenny Southan, Editor, Founder and CEO of Globetrender, says: "With human lifespans getting increasingly longer, for the first time in history there are seven generations of people alive at one time. When it comes to travel, gap years aren't just for young students – they can be for people in their sixties, too. Equally, cruises are evolving to appeal not just to retirees but to families and more intrepid solo travellers in their 30s.

“Taking a 'post-demographic' approach to travel design means that instead of focusing on the stereotypes associated with certain generations, advisors can instead identify what is motivating clients to book. More often than not it can be pegged to a life "milestone" of some kind – a birthday, redundancy, divorce, bereavement, wedding or inheritance, for example.”

cazenove+loyd x Globetrender's seven Milestone Motivations:

To provide the foundation for a new series of itinerary concepts cazenove+loyd is launching in 2023 to celebrate its own 30th anniversary milestone, Globetrender has coined seven Milestone Motivations that relate to the fundamental purpose of the trips people want to book:

  1. NEW BEGINNINGS:  Being able to “turn a new page” is vital to people's mental health and ability to move forward in life, especially after experiencing something traumatic such as a divorce or bereavement. But New Beginnings also relate to more positive chapters such as starting a new school year, graduating, relocating, starting a new relationship, or becoming an entrepreneur.
  2. MEANINGFUL DISCOVERIES:  Meaningful Discoveries is a powerful motivating force for travellers who want to evolve their understanding of something specific, open themselves up to trying something new or undertaking a “once in a lifetime” adventure.
  3. BUILDING BONDS: Whether it's a multi-generational holiday, a special parent-child trip, a group getaway with friends or a journey with a partner, Building Bonds is a Milestone Motivation that is pegged to one of our human needs – to feel connected.
  4. MEMORABLE CELEBRATIONS: Whether clients are going on honeymoon, having a destination wedding, or marking a birthday or anniversary, the most standout Milestone Motivation is Memorable Celebrations. When everything is riding on a certain special day, using an expert travel advisor to coordinate the logistics of an incredible overseas party for family and friends is priceless.
  5. PERSONAL LIBERATION: This Milestone Motivation relates to people wanting to make the most of their adulthood before becoming parents or after their offspring have left home. But it also aligns with anyone who wants to take a gap year, work remotely or make the most of retirement, for example.
  6. ACTIVE CONTEMPLATIONS: This relates to the role travel can play in achieving a sense of closure, reassessing who you are, gaining perspective and achieving clarity when looking to the future. Wellness tourism is often pegged to this Milestone Motivation, but trips can take many forms. Clients may be retiring from work, going on a sabbatical, resolving a personal loss or preparing for a new opportunity.
  7. LEGACY CREATION: Our final Milestone Motivations is tied to longevity, ancestry, the building of families and investment in personal betterment. Whether clients are grandparents who want to nurture their relationship with their grandchildren or people who yearn to explore their heritage, Legacy Building trips provide a lot of long-term value.

CAZENOVE+LOYD X GLOBETRENDER'S TRAVEL TRENDS AND CAZENOVE+LOYD'S NEW CONCEPT ITINERARIES

1- Pioneering safaris:

With conservation high on the agenda, Pioneering Safaris offer Meaningful Discoveries for travellers who want their presence to benefit (rather than exploit) the wildlife and ecosystems they are visiting. Not only that but rather than just 'view' animals they want to 'do' something to help.

New itinerary - A perspective-altering safari in the Congo Basin

Guests begin the adventure in Brazzaville, famous for its dapper Sapeurs – colourful fashionistas that dominate the street-style scene. Journey on to Ngaga Camp, a focal point for world-class primate research as well as unforgettable meetings with great apes. Next up is Lango Camp situated on the edge of Lango Baï, which offers one of the most arresting views of any camp in Africa. The final stop will be Mboko Camp, on the banks of the Likeni River which guests will explore by foot, car and by boat.

A cazenove+loyd special: Enjoy an immersive foray into the sights, sounds and spirit of Brazzaville, combining parades, dancing and walking the town with the Sapeurs and an expertly guided introduction to iconic locations. The Poto-Poto Textile Market and Painting School, St Anne's Basilica and the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial are all on the agenda, ending up with cocktails overlooking the mighty Congo River.

Price: 9-nights from £16,900 pp.

2- Indigenous Immersions:

Community engagement is one of the best examples of tourism as a force for good in the world. For travellers who want to truly broaden their horizons, spending time with indigenous people holds great rewards. Indigenous Immersions provide a unique opportunity to spend an extended period with a tribe, village or family that is very different to their own.

New itinerary: An epic adventure in Papua New Guinea, exploring its least accessible regions.

Touch down in raucous Port Moresby and explore city life before a meeting with the Asaro Mudmen in their fertile river valley community. Next up, at the Gorkora Festival, guests will witness performances from more than 100 tribes, before taking a helicopter to Mount Bosawi. Over three days in a remote village, visit spectacular waterfalls and scour the rainforest for birds of paradise, before heading to meet the Huli Wigmen in Tari, where traditional attire is still worn. Share a “mumu” traditional banquet with the hosts, then travel to Sepik, an area of vast river systems, beautiful coastlines and mountain ranges. Enjoy a crocodile safari on spectacular Kuvanmas Lake, and even the chance to observe a scarification ritual with the Crocodile Men if you wish. This is a powerful experience for both the tribe and guests; not only does the procedure open the doors to leadership within the community for the men and women that choose to undergo it, but it has profound and important meaning in the wider region.

A cazenove+loyd special: An immersive cultural experience of unprecedented proportions with the Kasua people. Be the guest of honour for an all-night banquet, with pigs slaughtered in your honour, as is customary for special guests.

Price: 12-nights from £32,600 pp.

3- DNA Pilgrimages:

With just a single drop of saliva, one can discover where their ancestors came from. By combining innovative science with expert historic research, DNA Pilgrimages offer the chance to bring one's legacy to life and learn more about who they are and the people and places they have come from. Whether it's tracing an ancestor's life journey or taking advantage of affordable and freely available home DNA testing, a new wave of tourism is being fuelled by genealogical and heritage curiosity.

New itinerary - Retracing the steps of a much loved and departed family member who served in the Gurkha Rifles

There's as much to experience in rural Nepal as there is in the great cultural cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. In the stunning Pokhara Valley, guests meet the team at the Gurkha Welfare Trust and visit a Tibetan refugee camp. Observe local wildlife on a jungle safari at the Chitwan National Park. At Dwarikas in Kathmandu, Nepal's only heritage hotel, a surprise, six-course dinner with the presentation of a specially created photographic memory album will provide a resonant finale.

A cazenove+loyd special: After tracking down fellow members of this ancestor's regiment, there will be a surprise rendezvous between them and the family over dinner in Pokhara. The fellow soldiers will recount tales of their old compatriot and share previously unseen photographs of him.

Price: Turn your DNA results into a real-life adventure exploring your family tree from £11,800 pp.

4- Carpe Diem Celebrations:

Whether friends and family are looking to host a milestone birthday or anniversary bash, a honeymoon or wedding, demand for exclusive-use villas, mansions, castles, yachts and even private islands are on the up. By booking a takeover, guests never need to worry about keeping other guests awake at night with their festivities and have free rein to design exactly the party that they want.

New itinerary - A destination celebration to remember in Brazil

A triple-pronged celebration that kicks off in Rio with guided expeditions and hikes up Sugar Loaf Mountain, dining and dancing in atmospheric restaurants and clubs, and hang-gliding onto the beach for lunch. Next up, immersion in the incredible Ibiti environmental project in the Ibitipoca National Park, which highlights sustainable tourism at its best. Lose yourself among the project's famous sculpture park, cycle and hike to waterfalls and natural pools, and enjoy yoga sessions every morning complemented by nourishing farm-to-table gastronomy. Beachside bliss on the coast ensues with jet-skis and schooners on-call, as well as a personal mixologist and massage therapist – the perfect tonic before a helicopter flight back up the Emerald Coast.

A cazenove+loyd special: Revel in the party spirit by joining a float at the Rio Carnival winners' parade and dance through the Sambadrome in full costume.

Price: 8-nights from £13,500 pp.

5- Transitory Exploring:

A form of slow tourism that shuns flights, Transitory Exploring sees nomadic luxury travellers embrace trains, RV road trips and boats on overland and oversea adventures that prioritise the journey, rather than the end-point destination. From retirement and gardening leave to sabbaticals and career breaks, long-term travel can be instrumental in preparing for a new life chapter or marking a specific transition.

6- Paradise Camps:

Families looking for the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience are heading to private islands and lodges to help teach their children about the natural world, in a utopian environment. For high-net worth Millennial parents of Generation Alpha (aged 0 to 12 in 2023), travel is increasingly being used as a way of expanding the minds of their offspring and providing them with educational opportunities they wouldn't get in the classroom.

7- Radical Sabbaticals:

Sabbaticals traditionally last up to a year but 'Radical Sabbaticals' can be achieved in a few weeks. The idea is that they are hyper-focused and intentional, and allow for deep rest or accelerated change, whoever you are, and whatever life stage you are at. As the demand for career or life breaks with purpose increases, extended itineraries that focus on specific intentions are becoming more relevant than ever before.
