Cavendish Hotel On Chatsworth Estate Unveils Restyled Bedrooms With Spring Package

Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants

Seven of the bedrooms in the original ‘house’ of the Cavendish Hotel on the Chatsworth estate, Derbyshire, have been completely restyled under the supervision of the Duchess of Devonshire. This work follows the refurbishment of the Devonshire wing of bedrooms in January 2013.  Guests can save £183 when they stay 3 nights in one of the new room: just £498 per couple, bed and full Derbyshire breakfast, valid Sunday to Friday nights until 30th September 2014.

Interior architect and design consultant Rachel McLane from North Yorkshire has been chosen to create and carry out the designs, which has included creating new shapes and space within the rooms as well as the new soft furnishings.

The Duchess of Devonshire, commenting on her choices, said, “Schemes have been chosen that work with the landscape and are sympathetic to the history of the building yet at the same time are striking by design and colour.  It was important to me that the bedrooms, as well as being a haven of comfort, are contemporary and distinctive.   I think our designs achieve that with touches such as the use of vibrant piping on a chair or how a particular headboard is made.”

As part of the ‘make-over’ Rachel McLane has had new fitted wardrobes made and chosen large individual pieces of furniture as desks or dressing tables to offer plenty of workspace, whether it is for a laptop or make-up.  “As well as looking beautiful, the functionality of the room is really important too, with good lighting, suitable power points and ensuring everything works well.  Additionally, we had the advantage of some wonderful artwork which we’ve had re-framed to complement the new interiors.”

Rachel continued, “The integrity of the building is very important.  It is such a lovely hotel and whilst the designs are modern and strong, they also balance with its history and location.”

The unveiling of the new rooms coincides with the re-opening of Chatsworth House for the 2014 season which is on 16th March.

The historic property in the pretty, bustling village of Baslow was originally the famous Peacock Inn, once owned by the Duke of Rutland, although it is uncertain exactly how old it is.  The hotel became part of the Duke of Devonshire’s estate around 1830 and in the early 1970s was restored and restyled as the Cavendish Hotel.   The Duchess of Devonshire oversees the design of the interiors.

There are two restaurants - the Gallery Restaurant which has continuously held 2 AA rosettes since 2006, and the light and airy Garden Room.  The Kitchen Table provides diners with a thrilling dining experience in the heart of the kitchen – a table for two where diners will enjoy a bespoke menu and can see for themselves what truly takes place whilst soaking up the atmosphere of a busy night’s service.

There are 23 bedrooms – each with its individual theme and design including original art and some antique furniture.

There is also a private room for luncheons, dinner parties and meetings.

The hotel’s location is ideal for sight-seeing and exploring. As the closest hotel to the House and Garden at Chatsworth, it is just a 15 minutes’ walk across the fields and park.  The Derbyshire Dales with all their attractions are right on the doorstep.

The Cavendish is available for exclusive use and as a venue for special celebrations.

The General Manager is Philip Joseph who has been at the hotel since 2001

The Head Chef since 2011 is Mike Thompson.
