Cast of a Lifetime, launched this month, is no ordinary fishing book, but is an odyssey of a lifetimes travel in pursuit of salmon and related species, mainly in far flung northern lands. While fishing forms the central theme there is much more to the book than simply catching fish.
Journeys to Baffin Island in Arctic Canada, Alaska, Arctic Russia, Finnmark, Iceland, Greenland and the Lofoten Islands include contact with indigenous peoples the Inuit, the Saami and others. There are encounters with wild animals and a hair-raising pursuit by a grizzly bear enlivens a days fishing in the forests of Alaska.
A search for arctic char fishing in northern Canada leads to a seal hunting expedition in an open canoe with an Inuit in the pack ice off Baffin Island.
Scotlands own rivers and lochs are not ignored and there are accounts of fishing the Naver, the Thurso, the Awe and Spey and there is a description of the melancholy magic of Grimersta in the Outer Hebrides.
The common thread running through the book is the authors sense of exhilaration with the natural environment experienced in the company of lifelong friends and companions.
Cast of a Lifetime is hardback book is beautifully produced with nearly 100 illustrations and maps, mostly in colour, and will be of great interest to fishermen and others who enjoy the worlds wide open spaces.
