BRITS ARE GOING BAHAM-Y FOR THE CARIBBEAN

An increase in product choice, new flight routes and a rise in celebrity holiday snaps on social media, has led to a major surge in holiday bookings to the Caribbean since the beginning of the year, according to figures released by Travel Republic.*

With disposable income at a low, Brit's are also turning to the Caribbean for great value for money holidays, in particular on All Inclusive stays, the most popular board basis when visiting the Caribbean.

Results provided by leading online travel agent, Travel Republic, show destinations benefiting from this trend include, The Bahamas seeing the biggest increase at 60%, followed by the Dominican Republic at 53% and southern islands Antigua enjoying a 14% boost and Barbados recording a 12% increase in bookings.

Whilst the Caribbean is still popular for honeymoons and romantic holidays, some islands are noticing a trend in the family market. Both The Bahamas and Dominican Republic have a bookings increase of over 150% with families.

In The Bahamas, visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming with pigs on the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay or seek thrills at Aquaventure waterpark on the aptly named Paradise Island.

For culture seekers, the many churches and museums at Santo Domingo, the capital city of Dominican Republic will keep them entertained and nature lovers can enjoy whale watching from the shores of the Samana Peninsula, where they come to breed from January to March.

As a result of this bookings increase to the Dominican Republic, the area has become the second most popular Caribbean destination amongst Travel Republic customers, following Cuba at number one. Jamaica comes in third in the top 10 followed by Barbados and Saint Lucia.

Ten most popular Caribbean destinations by Travel Republic customers

A spokesperson for Travel Republic said, “It is great to see such strong growth and enthusiasm amongst our customers for the Caribbean, in particular islands such as Antigua and Barbados which have been steadily expanding their accommodation and attraction product.

The Caribbean offers a wide choice of grand resorts, plenty of options for day trips and a good guarantee of sun and all for excellent value for money, so it is no surprise to see so many of us travelling west!”

Couples wanting to enjoy some winter sun in the Caribbean, can book a week All Inclusive at 4* Sugar Bay Barbados from a total price of £1,353 (saving £492pp) based on two sharing, when flying from London Gatwick on 2nd October.
