Anthony Caponi is a masterpiece. Like his art, he has been sculpted and molded into one of the most highly regarded teachers and philosophers during the past 80 years.
Born to a poor but proud family in the Italian Apennine Mountains, Tony was raised by his mother and the village women while his father set off to America to seek fortune for his family.
As a boy, Tony created mud sculptures from the rocky clay. Today, he makes multi-ton sculptures that grace the Caponi Art Park, a 60-acre wooded landscape owned and maintained by the Eagan, MN resident. Tony came to America as a teen, joined the US Army and fought against Benito Mussolini on his native soil. He lived in Ohio prior to settling in Eagan, Minnesota. He was the art department head at Macalester College in St. Paul, where he taught for more than four decades. Currently, he serves as the artistic director of the private art park named for him.
Open to the public, the Caponi Art Park includes an outdoor performance area and walking paths through wooded hillsides. Park users will likely find Tony somewhere along the path, cleaning fallen brush or preparing an area for a new sculpture. On scheduled weekends, Tony is chauffeur in his golf cart, carrying guests from the parking lots to the Theater in the Woods for free performances. The Elizabethan festival is Sunday, August 1 from 3 to 9 p.m.
Located five miles south of St. Paul, Minnesota in the middle of a quiet suburban city, the Caponi Art Park and Theater in the Woods offers an escape from the stresses and pressures of todays urban professional. The property is currently being considered for long-term preservation through a county green space program. Tony lives within the park boundaries with his wife Cheryl and their two daughters.
