Canadian Museum For Human Rights Opens In 2014

Travel Manitoba

It has been announced that The Canadian Museum of Human Rights (CMHR), a national museum currently under construction in Winnipeg, Manitoba will open its doors to the public on the 20th September 2014.

The museum will be the first national museum in Canada's history to be located outside the National Capital Region and will be a national and international centre not only for visitors to learn about human rights issues but also for students and researchers to use as a learning centre so the museum will include a large reference centre, library and archive.

The iconic building that will soon be home to the museum has been designed by world renowned architect Antoine Predock. Predock's concept for the structure of the museum combines both stone and glass and has been inspired by Canadian landscape and culture. His vision is for visitors to be taken on a journey beginning with a descent into the Earth through the 'roots' of the museum. The journey will incorporate over 47,000 square feet of exhibit space and nearly a kilometre of bridges all displaying human rights stories before visitors end their journey at the Tower of Hope a 23 storey glass structure overlooking Winnipeg.

The exhibits for the opening of the museum will contain an assortment of themes including Canadian human rights, Aboriginal human rights, the Holocaust and current human rights issues. As part of the development of these exhibits a team of researchers travelled to 19 cities in Canada and interviewed thousands of people about their human rights issues and what they would want to see in the museum.

It is estimated that 250,000 people from across Canada and the world will visit the museum each year and the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) is promoting it as a future member of their 'Signature Experience Collection'. Winnipeg as a whole is undergoing an exciting renaissance not only with the opening of the The Canadian Museum of Human Rights (CMHR) but also with other exciting projects including a new world-class polar bear exhibit at nearby Assiniboine Park. These new initiatives are sure to make Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba the exciting new destination of 2014!
