Camps International, Havaianas & South Coast Residents Association Launch Turtle With A Message In Diani! "Keep Kenya's Coastline Clean!"

ATTA (African Travel and Tourism Association)

Many of you may remember having seen or read about the striking giant turtle sculpture outside Nakumatt Diani a while back. Well, like all of us it was in need of some TLC and has now taken it's rightful pose again. Just like before this turtle has been made from flip flops collected from the beaches of Kenya's South Coast meaning we all still have a major marine pollution problem!

On August 19th 2013, Camps International along with Havaianas and S.C.R.A (South Coast Resident's Association) joined forces re-launching the message

"KEEP KENYA'S COASTLINE CLEAN!"

This sculpture has been made from over 1000 flip flops littering Diani & Galu beaches, collected by Camps International volunteers involved in ongoing marine conservation projects. Beach clean ups are an unfortunate aspect of marine conservation created by human disregard to our fragile planet.

Camps International take their global environmental responsibilities very seriously. It is no coincidence that many of their camps worldwide are located on or near the coast and their camps at Camp Kenya are no exception with 3 camps near the south coast. Kenya's beaches are among the most spectacular in the world housing an amazing and extremely fragile marine eco-system which needs protecting from unsustainable human activity putting increasing pressure on our planet!

Over the past 11 years Camps International, with the help of their volunteers, has collected an astounding 18 tonnes of marine refuse off the beaches on 3 continents (Africa, Asia & South America)! Beach clean ups achieve an enormous amount and go a long way to educate future generations as to the real value of conserving our marine ecosystems.

Just like Camps International, the flip flop giant Havaianas also take conservation very seriously. Mr Eno Polo, CEO of Havaianas for Europe, Middle East & Africa was present at the launch and told us:

"Havaianas is a product and brand that is closely linked to the beach environment and therefore we always look to invest and support initiatives to protect and conserve the marine life. We have a strong association with a variety of projects around the world such as Conservation International. We are delighted to be part of 'Keep Kenya's Coastline Clean' and support marine conservation in Kenya."

(Simon Englefield - MD Camps International Africa, Luciana Parazzi - Chairperson S.C.R.A, Eno Polo - EMEA CEO Havaianas, Mr. Mohamed Kheri - Head Warden Kwale KWS)

Also present at the launch of this message was Mr. Mohamed Kheri, Head Warden KWS Kwale District with his family supporting Camps International, Havaianas and S.C.R.A giving Kenya's coastline a voice.
