Calling All Motor Sport Fans: The Baiersbronn Classic 2013

SouthWest Germany Tourism Board

Love motor sport? Looking for the perfect weekend break? Then head for the Black Forest in SouthWest Germany this autumn.

The magnet is the Baiersbronn Classic 2013. From September 12-15, the pretty village of Baiersbronn is recreating memories of the Ruhestein Bergrennen (hill climb race), a car race that took place in 1946. This was the historic moment after World War II when motor sport resumed in Germany.

The Baiersbronn Classic 2013 is a three-day endurance and efficiency event. On Day One, the prologue, the cars follow the romantic Murgtal to the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Black Forest High Road). Day Two is spent exploring the vineyards of the glorious Ortenau, Germany's southern-most Riesling-growing area. Day Three is a tour through the Black Forest. Each day starts and finishes in Baiersbronn, an idyllic destination with three restaurants that boast 7 Michelin stars between them: Harald Wohlfahrt (3* Schwarzwaldstube Restaurant in Tonbach; Claus-Peter Lumpp (3* Bareiss Restaurant in Mitteltal); Jörg Sackmann (1* Schlossberg Restaurant in Schwarzenberg). The race begins at the heart of the scene, the Rosenplatz, with the exception of Saturday, September 14. On this day the starting signal will be at the historic spot in Baiserbronn Obertal.

Perhaps the biggest star attraction is a car: the legendary BMW 328 Touring Coupé. Built in 1939 by Carrozzeria Touring, this streamlined, aluminium-bodied car won Le Mans in 1939, the Mille Miglia in 1940 and the Ruhestein Bergrennen right here in 1946 years ago. Eventually, the car was shipped to North America, then forgotten in a garage, before BMW brought her home in 2002.

Driving this glamorous legend in September is Prince Leopold of Bavaria, one of Germany's best-known sports car drivers. A former winner of the North American Touring Car Championship and a Le Mans 24 Hour competitor, he is just one personality among the many that are expected to line up on September 12. Although there is a limit of 100 participants, there are still a few places available.

The Baiersbronn Classic 2013 is as interesting for spectators as for competitors. This is an opportunity to eat gourmet food, to ogle Maseratis, Morgans, MGs and BMWs, to meet the drivers, and, of course, to enjoy some of Europe's most beautiful scenery at a beautiful time of year. That's why the Baiersbronn Classic 2013 is the perfect weekend!
