Brits Perfect Holiday: Sun, City and Local Food!

Online travel agent, Travel Republic can reveal that it is not only sun, sea and sand that we all crave.

In a survey of over 5500 British holiday makers to find out what constitutes the perfect holiday, nearly 70% of respondents, said their ideal type of break is a short-haul beach or pool holiday. However, when asked to drill down in a little more detail about what would ideally be there to see and do, perhaps the biggest surprise came, that in joint first place on people's lists (70%) alongside beach is, places to eat local food! Dispelling the myth that many Brits just eat English food on holiday!

In second place with 56% is a cultural city or town to explore, showing that we don't just like to lie on a sun-lounger all day! In joint third place, is a small local shopping area and some local bars – which does highlight our love of shopping and enjoying a drink on holiday! The third is perhaps not such a surprise to many.

A significant and contented 78% chose their existing partner as their perfect travel companion, over their children, parents, siblings, friends or even any choice of celebrity! Of those who did opt for a well-known face, George Clooney came out on top for the women, while Joanna Lumley was favourite amongst men – but funny-men and footballers also proved popular! With Ant & Dec, Keith Lemon, Peter Kay and John Bishop all receiving votes, along with David Beckham, Kenny Dalglish, Lee Collins and Harry Kane.

Finally, the perfect holiday is two weeks long and much anticipated, with the majority (just under 40%) booking 4-6 months in advance. It will come as no surprise that us British like it hot, a massive 95% of holiday makers look for a warm or hot climate on their perfect holiday, but 5% did opt for cool or snowy weather over heat.

Ian Simmonds, Managing Director for Travel Republic comments, “We assist more than three million holiday makers each year with a vast variety of holidays, from pool and beach holidays, to city and ski breaks, and magical trips to far-flung places. For this survey we tried to encourage respondents to sum up a mythical holiday land that depicts their perfect holiday, and the majority of Brits paint a similar picture, the overriding result is that the perfect place has a mix of things to do and see for everyone, with local culture and food being important.”
