If you thought that you had to holiday in a far-flung exotic location to catch sight of some truly stunning scenery, you'd be wrong: a new survey shows that the UK has views which rank up there with the very best around the world.
Sykes Cottages put Brits to the test with the Britain or Abroad quiz, asking them to guess whether a selection of stunning photos were taken in Great Britain or overseas. The results showed that a large number of people can't see the difference between the UK's best sights and those in foreign lands.
More than one in three people who completed the Britain or Abroad quiz from Sykes Cottages thought the views of Gwynedd in Snowdonia National Park (39%) and the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands (34%) were overseas.
Also high on the list of locations people though were overseas was Durdle Door on Dorset's Jurassic Coast (34%) and the picturesque Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire (26%).
A significant number of respondents also wrongly identified treasures of the Netherlands, US and Denmark as being in Britain.
Some 66% thought the view of Hundested Harbour in Denmark was to be found in Blighty and 59% of people thought the photo of the tranquil Lake Solitude in Wyoming was in Britain.
The mistakes didn't stop there; 43% of people thought the stunning Kasteel Waardenburg, Netherlands belonged to Albion.
Tom Lowes of Sykes Cottages said: “We wanted our Britain or Abroad quiz to show people that you don't have to travel overseas to see some truly breathtaking scenery; it can be found right on your doorstep.
“Great Britain is home to some of the most picturesque countryside and coastlines in the world, from Snowdonia National Park, to the Highlands of Scotland and the Jurassic Coast of Dorset.
“With 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 15 National Parks and 1,000 smaller islands to its name, Great Britain has so much to be discovered and enjoyed.”
The stunning images of Lindisfarne Castle in Northumberland, Mediterranean-inspired Minack Theatre in Cornwall and Lake Windermere in the Lake District were the top three places most people thought were in the UK.
