Research out this week from ebookers.com, the online travel experts, suggests that as we head into the 21st Century the great Ancient wonders of the world are soon to be forgotten. The survey revealed that whilst the British public were quick to name their own modern day wonders of the world 93% failed to correctly name the seven original ones. 52% of respondents citied The Channel Tunnel as their number one wonder while 39% preferred the Millennium Dome.

It appears in todays modern society, many seasoned travellers are unaware of the cultural heritage behind countries often visited. When asked to name the original seven wonders of the world respondents wrongly named Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco, Hoover Dam Arizona, Harbour Bridge Sydney and The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Only 3% knew that Greece was home to 5 of the original seven wonders including The Collosus, Lighthouse Alexandria and The Mausoleum, Halicarnassus. Iraq and Egypt is where you could have seen the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and The Great Pyramid of Giza.

The Ancient 7 Wonders Most Popular Places Thought to be of the World are: the Ancient Wonders: The Collosus at Rhodes The Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco Lighthouse Alexandria Hoover Dam Arizona The Mausoleum in Halicarnassus Harbour Bridge, Sydney The Statue of Zeus, Olympia The Leaning Tower of Piza The Temple of Artemis, Ephesus The Great Wall of China The Hanging Gardens of Babylon The Panama Canal in Panama The Great Pyramid of Giza. The Empire State Building

When participants were asked to name their seven wonders of the world the following seven came out on top: The Channel Tunnel The Millennium Dome The Great Wall of China The Sydney Opera House The Eiffel Tower, Paris Machu Picchu, Peru The Sphynx, Cairo

Other firm favourites across the globe were The Statue of Liberty in New York, Mount Rushmore South Dakota and The Ice Castle in Finland. Says Ian Carter, UK Managing Director ebookers.com, Although we might think that the seven wonders are a great part of our heritage and date back to ancient times, this survey shows that people have very little idea what or where the seven wonders are. When tourists travel abroad they often go in search of the renowned food, plentiful drink or hectic nightlife but are consequently missing out on the historical side of the country which would be so easy to visit. ebookers have now put in place both online and in their call centre trained staff who are able to package up the best possible route to historical excursions across the world so your trip can include a bit of everything.

Ebookers.com are available 24-7 and can arrange flights or package holidays to any of the original, or any of your own personal favourite wonders of the world. Just log onto www.ebookers.com or telephone 0870 043 3957.
