Whistler Blackcomb: www.whistlerblackcomb.com
Whistler Blackcomb marks its 50th anniversary throughout January 2016, celebrating the resort's many milestones; among the first to allow snowboarders to ride the lifts, breaking Guinness World Records with the building of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola and hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010.
New for backcountry enthusiasts, Head Line Mountain Holidays provides luxury, once-in-a-lifetime experiences including the Pemberton Ice Fields via helicopter, snowmobiles, snowbikes, ice caves and backcountry hot springs.
A new snowmaking pilot project aimed at preserving the Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb Mountain will be launched this winter, testing four low-energy-consumption snowmaking guns in the Horstman Hut area to determine if a full-scale snowmaking system is an option to prevent further recession. The project aims to help preserve Whistler Blackcomb's summer glacier experience and improve early season access to glacier skiing and snowboarding during the winter. Installation will begin in late July, with snowmaking anticipated to begin in early October. The Horstman Glacier is one of two glaciers in North America to offer skiing and snowboarding and serves as a training area for ski and snowboard national teams from all over the world.
The Audain Art Museum will open in the heart of Whistler Village during the winter 2015/16 season, featuring the private collection of Michael Audain and his wife Yoshiko Karasawa. The permanent collection, housed in a contemporary 56,000sq ft museum, features more than 24 Emily Carr works, the largest collection of EJ Hughes paintings, art by some of Canada's most significant post-war modernists including Jack Shadbolt, as well as internationally-collected contemporary artists.
Sun Peaks Resort: www.sunpeaksresort.com
Now Canada's second largest ski area, Sun Peaks Resort will continue to redefine its boundaries with additional trail development for Winter 2015/16. Up to two new runs will be completed in the West Morrisey area this summer, continuing to build out the challenging Laundromat area in anticipation of the planned West Morrisey chairlift.
Increased glading will continue to enhance the ski experience in Gil's with new and exclusive, private full-day Gil's tours which will navigate and explore the previously 'backcountry only' area, building on the recent success of Sports School's off-piste programmes such as the All Mountain Skills Camp.
Silver Star Mountain Resort: www.skisilverstar.com
Silver Star has expanded the My1pass, Canada's first all-inclusive lift ticket and season pass, to include its newest winter activity: Fat Biking on 10+ kms of trails. Day ticket and season pass holders will have unlimited skiing and snowboarding along with unrestricted access to Nordic trails, snowshoe trails, fat biking trails, tubing and ice skating.
Designed for cycling in the snow fat bikes have over-sized tyres on wide rims. Intro sessions, Ladies Night and group rides provide opportunities to experience this increasingly popular sport.
Silver Star has invested in additional terrain and new grooming equipment to improve its ski experience for all guests. The resort is currently working through approvals to develop new gladed ski terrain in both Putnam Creek and Silver Woods, and for fans of Silver Star's groomed runs two new Pisten Bully groomers are being added to the fleet, bringing it up to nine machines including two winch cats.
