We've put together the important dates for your 2014 diary. From major anniversaries to fantastic stage productions, blockbuster exhibitions to new attractions, find GREAT material for story ideas in VisitBritain's guide to 2014.
The VisitBritain press team has updated its guide to Sport, with plenty of new story ideas and inspiration especially for media writing about Britain. With the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and Grand Départ of the Tour de France taking place in Britain next year, not to mention the Rugby League World Cup this year, and the Rugby Union World Cup in 2015, there's a lot of sporting action to come.
The countdown to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year has begun in earnest as the Queen's Baton Relay kicked off its incredible 190,000km, 248-day international journey. Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB), VisitScotland and VisitBritain will jointly operate a Destination Media Hub (DMH) at the iconic IET Glasgow: Teacher Building in the city's St Enoch Square. This 'one-stop shop' for consumer and news media visiting the UK is conveniently located in the heart of Glasgow city, and will operate from Sunday, July 20 to Monday, August 4 between 8am and 8pm.
The Lonely Planet has released its 'Best in Travel 2014', in which it ranks the top 10 countries, regions and cities to visit next year. As Scotland and Yorkshire triumph on the hotlist, VisitBritain gives you five reasons to visit each destination next year.
2014 marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare. His works are still very much alive, performed in multiple languages all over the world, but there's nowhere like Britain for getting to know more about the man himself and experiencing his plays at the theatres they were designed to be put on at.
Literature Wales has launched A Dylan Odyssey, a series of special events and tours that will form part of the Dylan Thomas 100 Festival in 2014, marking the centenary of the birth of legendary Welsh poet. There will be plenty to explore in Wales next year for lovers of literature.
