An eclectic lineup of special events and family activities! The Wild West and the modern frontier come to life during 2004 in Carson City. Reflecting its authentic western heritage with flavor and fun from the past and present, Carson City�s unique events range from the tame to the adventurous.
March 13 - 10th Annual Cowboy Jubilee and Poetry Silver-tongued cowboys will share their homespun yarns and yodels with authentic music and poetry at the Carson Community Center Theater. Featuring the talent of Paul Zarzyski, Tom Russell and Andrew Hardin, Sourdough Slim, Don Edwards, and Randy Pollard, John Mclain, and Paul Carelli, this year�s jubilee promises to have the audience dancing �round the campfire. Providing entertainment for the audience and accompaniment for the cowboys will be the Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association. Between shows, attendees can enjoy an authentic Western tri-tip barbeque dinner.
Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 775-883-1532 or at the door from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Performances will be at 4 & 8 p.m. Dinner is from 5 to 8pm. Tickets are $25 for reserved seating and $20 for general admission. Barbeque tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. Proceeds benefit the Carson-Tahoe Hospital.
May 29 - Wild West Tour along the Kit Carson Trail In this, an election year, visitors can get a glimpse of what politics was like in Carson City at the turn of the twentieth century on the �Politics and the Wild West� Tour; a 1.5-mile guided walking tour through Carson City�s historic district. Historic homes will be open for viewing; tour guides will lead visitors along the path while costumed actors recreate early twentieth century life.
Groups meet and depart every 30 minutes beginning at 9:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. from Telegraph and Curry Streets. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors aged 65 and older and for children 12 and under. Children 6 and under are free. Tickets can purchased in advanced at the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
June 11-13 - Carson City Rendezvous This historic weekend takes visitors back to life on the frontier, recreating simpler times when brave explorers would periodically meet up at what they called �The Rendezvous�. Favorite annual activities include re-enactments of Civil War skirmishes, Native American dancing, and live western entertainment. Guests can experience the Renaissance Faire, the Pueblo de Nevada village, participate in camel rides, and view the Pony Express Exhibitions and the gun-fighters show.
The Mountain Man Encampment is the nerve center for historic storytelling and songs of the early Nevada days. The exhibit illustrates early frontier life and will also include authentic, how-to demonstrations: fire starting with flint and steel, muzzle loading a rifle or pistol, and the requisite tomahawk and knife throwing contests. (Please remember to stand behind the contestants!) Traders Row features period clothing, beads, hats, powder horns and leather products for purchase.
Other Rendezvous attractions include live entertainment, a Dutch Oven Cook-off, food court and craft fair. Located at Mills Park, all events are free to the public.
June 19 - Taste of Downtown Visitors and locals alike can leave the past behind and get a taste for modern day Carson City on this downtown walking tour. The finest restaurants in town each prepare a smattering of their cuisine, then open their doors from 5:00 to 9:00pm for diners to stroll in and taste the prepared samples. A variety of musical talents will provide live entertainment until midnight. Tickets are $30. Call Advocates to End Domestic Violence, (775) 883-7654, to place your name on the waiting list. Tickets become available two weeks prior to the event.
July 30-August 1 - Silver Dollar Car Classic An annual favorite, Carson City once again hosts its weekend celebration and parade of classic autos with more than 150 models and makes of cars and bikes from pre-1930�s through 2004.
The popular Cruise of Champions � featuring all competitors, will depart the Pony Express Pavilion and make its collective way down the main drag, Carson Street through the heart of Carson City, Friday at 6 p.m. Following the parade, pedestrians take over the streets to dance the night away on Carson Street by the Carson City Nugget.
On Saturday, the classic cars and bikes are on viewing display in Mills Park. Craft and food vendors will also be on hand to ply their trades. In keeping with the theme, a free drive-in movie for the public will be shown adjacent to the Pony Express Pavilion at Mills Park. Some come to remember old times, some come for the first time but everyone comes to have a good time.
On Sunday, a $1 million Poker Run starts at the Pony Express Pavilion. Participants pay $5 to buy a poker hand, then drive to seven different stops obtaining a random card at each. Whoever has the highest poker hand gets to shoot for a $1 million hole-in-one at nearby Empire Ranch Golf Course. There are also cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place.
August 28-29 - Nevada State Museum Coin Show The Nevada State Museum will host coin dealers from throughout the United States showcasing rare Carson City minted coins, tokens, gold and silver, bullion and jewelry. Housed in what was formerly the Carson City Mint, the show will run from 9:00am to 4:30pm. For more information, call (775) 687-4811.
October 23 - Kit Carson Trail Ghost Walk This annual 90-minute trick or treat tour is complete with ghosts, goblins and ghouls as well as a host of characters from Carson City�s past and present! Verified, honest-to-ghost stories as well as tall tales from mystery ghosts will greet visitors daring enough to set foot in the haunted and historic homes on the Kit Carson Trail.
Along with the historic Victorian homes, many of the original ghosts remain as a reminder of Carson City�s colorful history. Visits from the spirits of Mark Twain, town namesake Kit Carson, and founder Abe Curry can be expected in solid and costumed form.
Previous tours have included stops at the Bliss Mansion, former home of Duane L. Bliss, a lumber and railroad magnate, built in 1879; Nevada�s state capitol; the Governor�s Mansion; the home of Orion Clemens, whose fame extended to brother Samuel, or Mark Twain; and the St. Charles-Muller Hotel.

October 23-31 - Nevada Day Celebration Happy 140th Birthday Nevada! The Silver State commemorates its statehood anniversary in grand style with one of the largest celebrations in the country.
Events will include the Nevada Day Music and Heritage Festival, an 8k run and two-mile run/walk, and the 31st Annual World Championship Single Jack Drilling contest. Featuring an old-time battle of strength and skill, contestants use 4-1/2 pound hammers to drill a hole in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite in ten minutes, re-enacting Comstock mining skills when blast holes for dynamite were punched into ore by hand.
Nevada Day activities culminate October 31 with the 66th Nevada Day Parade, the largest in the state. In 2003, there were over 200 entries in the parade. The event will feature floats, marching bands, high stepping equestrians and a variety of entertainers meandering down Carson Street. The parade begins at 10:00am on Carson Street. December 12 - Victorian Home Christmas Tour The Victorian Home Christmas Tour features visits into the west�s largest district of 1800�s era Victorian homes, all decorated for the holidays in vintage, turn-of-the-century ornaments and finery. Costumed docents will provide illuminating tales on the history behind each structure, while period entertainers perform in the style of the day.
The buildings in the Victorian Homes Tour will be open to the public from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 and older and students age 13-18; and $3 for children five to 12. Tickets for the self-guided tour can be purchased at the Carson City Convention & Visitors Bureau and other community locations. Presented by Nevada Historical Society and Carson City Redevelopment, this annual tour ranks as one of the area�s most popular.
