These school holidays, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium is launching the ultimate penguin fan experience – Penguin Passport – Sydney's first and only ticket to a chilly face-to-flipper encounter with the attraction's sub-Antarctic penguin colony.

Suited up in Helly Hansen snow gear, the exclusive 45 minute tour – where waddling is encouraged - takes guests behind the scenes of the Macquarie Island icy wonderland where majestic King and cheeky Gentoo penguins slip and slide along the ice right in front of where they'll be standing.

Guests will also have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes to see the penguin food preparation area as well as how this state-of-the-art exhibit maintains its chilly six degree temperature.

“We are really excited to give our guests the opportunity to step onto the ice and meet our colony of King and Gentoo penguins for the first time,” said Richard Dilly, General Manager, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium.

“Not many people will have the chance during their lifetime to go face-to-flipper with these majestic birds and as we have Sydney's only Sub Antarctic Penguin colony, we wanted our guests to have the opportunity to do so.”

“We would also like our guests to learn more about the threats facing wild penguin colonies including plastic pollution and ways they can reduce their plastic footprints by reducing, recycling and reusing.”

Penguin Expedition opened in November 2016 and is the world first penguin exhibit with a ride taking explorers on an immersive, sensory journey to meet our spectacular colony of King and Gentoo penguins. Inspired by Macquarie Island - an Australian owned island that lies in the south-west Pacific Ocean - Penguin Expedition creates an explorer out of each and every guest as they travel in a raft through a rugged, sub-Antarctic environment at a cool but comfortable six degrees Celsius.

The voyage includes coming face-to-flipper in an awe-inspiring recreation of the penguins' home, including magical flurries of snow, whistling winds and the stunning southern lights. Amazing discoveries await after disembarking thanks to the researchers at the Macquarie Island Explorer Hut. Visitors will find out about SEA LIFE Sydney Australia's penguin breeding programme, its work to protect the island from plastic pollution and what they can do to help protect our oceans and wild penguin colonies.
