The three Bondi lifeguards who will shoot an international television special at this year's Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival (April 11-13, 2014) have officially been named.
Andrew 'Reidy' Reid, Adriel 'Bacon' Young and Corey Oliver will make the culture-shocking trip from Bondi Beach to Julia Creek - 800km west of Townsville - to take part in the 20th Annual Julia Creek Cannington Dirt n Dust Triathlon, along with a host of outback-esque activities including a flutter at the BHP Billiton Artesian Express, a crack at the Australia's Best Butt competition and perhaps even a shot at riding a bull under the supervision of PBR.
None of the three lifeguards have heard of Julia Creek before, nor are they totally aware of what they're in for, but one thing is for sure - it's going to be a dirty weekend!
"I want to come home from Julia Creek in such a filthy state that Napisan would have no chance," said Reidy.
"I really want to be involved in everything the Dirt n Dust Festival has to offer; I'm looking forward to the rough outback conditions trying to break me, but I don't plan on swallowing any muddy creek water during the swim, that's for sure."
Corey's plan to overcome poorer visibility than the boys are used to in the Bondi surf might have some Dirt n Dust regulars looking over their shoulders.
"I think I'll try to find a local competitor, stay on their feet and hope they know where to go," said Corey.
It's an intelligent plan and one that might set him up well for the gruelling sprint triathlon – often dubbed Australia's toughest – which will see the boys join 450 competitors in swimming 800m through a yabby-infested road-side creek, riding 25K into a seemingly endless horizon and running 5K over searing bitumen as the mercury approaches 40-degrees-celsius.
"I'm definitely one for the adventure, and I'll try to fit in with the Outback-types like a chameleon," Corey said.
"If I do get locked out at night by the Reidy and Bacon, my survival instincts will definitely kick in. Night trekking in the Borneo forest should be a big help."
Bacon said he expects the trip to the North West will be akin to be in another country.
"I think it's going to be an unreal experience. I suspect we'll share the love of a good time and a good laugh with the locals, but otherwise there will probably be some staggering differences in our lifestyles," Bacon said.
"I'll do my best to pick up the local slang, and I'd love to get my hands on an Akubra before the trip."
The boys will spend several days in the North West, road tripping along the Overlanders Way from Townsville and capturing the journey for the yet-to-be-named production by RJM Media.
While the broadcast date has not been confirmed, the special is set to air in 30 countries across the Americas, the United Kingdom, Europe, South Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
