Formerly used as a dairy and pony club camp, these child and pet-friendly barns remain true to their equine heritage; guests can bring, stable and graze their horses without charge, and pets can come too.
As well as a host of local bridleways, there’s even access to a cross country course on site. And for those without a horse, there’s a selection of local equestrian centres to choose from too.
Lovingly converted, Chisel Barn Foxditch comes with two pretty en-suite bedrooms, both of which have zip and link beds, which means they can be arranged as singles or as super king-size beds to meet your individual requirements.
The well equipped kitchen and spacious living room both have attractive limestone flooring as does the pretty dining area. Here, you can sit beneath the barn’s original beams, retained from its days as a dairy, and gaze out of the window at the attractive rural setting.
The sitting area, which consists of two cosy leather sofas, a coffee table, and side table with lamp, sits in front of the crackling log burning stove, which has been raised on a characterful ‘old brick’ platform to cast heat into the heart of the room. Entertainment is provided by a 40” flatscreen TV complete with Freeview and iPod docking station; Wi-Fi is also available.
Next door Chisel Barn Whites Ground has three generous bedrooms sleeping up to six guests. Each has been beautifully finished with exposed wooden beams and have views over the pretty rural countryside or out across the open yard.
The master en-suite bedroom, which has a 20” flatscreen TV, comes with a super king-size bed that can be arranged as singles, as can the bed in bedroom two. Bedroom three comes with two attractive twin beds, matching chests of drawers, beside cabinets and lamps.
As with Foxditch, Whites Ground has a well equipped kitchen and a large living and dining area with limestone flooring, exposed beams, a raised log burning stove and access to the garden via French Doors.
The light, airy and attractive living space is beautifully finished with original works of art depicting the barn when it was in use by the pony club. Furnished with an attractive coffee table, side tables and lamps, a large comfy L-shaped sofa and arm chair, this cosy space is the perfect place to sit back and relax or enjoy the entertainment package, which consists of a 40” flatscreen TV complete with Freeview, DVD player and iPod docking station. Wi-fi access is also available.
Outside, both Chisel Barn Foxditch and Chisel Barn Whites Ground have access to a separate landscaped lawn with terrace, table and chairs. Overlooking the pretty Stour Valley, visitors have free range over 65 acres of working farmland, which includes a private pond, wild flower walks and bluebell woods. There’s even access to the pretty Trailway along the old Somerset and Dorset Railway, which takes you to the beautifully restored Shillington Station half a mile or so away.
Close by are magnificent views looking over the River Stour valley, the dairy pastures of the Blackmore Vale, the churches of Shillingstone and Child Okeford to the south and west respectively. To the north lies the Iron Age fort of Hambledon Hill, and to the east, Hod Hill. A short walk across the farm takes you through a wood and past the wildlife pond to the excellent amenities of Child Okeford and its local organic farm shop.
Local attractions include The Great Dorset Steam Fair, the largest in Europe, which takes place from 28 August to 01 September. Also close by is Stourhead House and gardens, Shaftesbury and the historic towns and cities of Dorchester, Salisbury, Bath and Wells.
