South Africa is a dynamic, constantly evolving destination that poses a wealth of opportunities for travellers to discover its beauty and culture in an entirely new light. 2016 is the perfect time to plan a luxury holiday to South Africa to take advantage of the value for money, affordable luxury, amazing wildlife, accessible adventure, and a burgeoning food and wine scene. Luxury travel company, Black Tomato has been sending its clients there for over a decade and is lifting the lid on its latest and most exciting new experiences to explore what's already a well-known destination. The experiences range from those looking for a relaxed cultural break to those looking for some added thrill factor.
- A day in the life of a Capetonian
Black Tomato can arrange for guests to live a day in the life of a local Capetonian. Known as one of the most livable and vibrant cities in the world. Capetonians are known for their love of the outdoors, so you'll start your day early with a sunrise hike up Lions Head where we can arrange a spot of yoga as the sun comes up over the city bowl. You'll then take a private tour of the fashionable, warm hearted village in the heart of Woodstock where Cape Town's talented people come together to share, collaborate and show off their unique passions such as art, baking, or distilling. You'll then drive through the mother city Mother City to the trendy Cape Quarter Village located below Signal Hill to browse the lifestyle concept stores and a few of our favorite eateries. Like a true Capetonian you'll finish your day with Sundowners on a cruise around Table Bay, or on top of Table Mountain.
- Embark on a Triathlon on Robben Island and stay overnight in a cell
Black Tomato can arrange for guests looking for a challenging way to see one of the country's most iconic and historic landscapes in a totally unique and boundary pushing way. Guests can arrive in the Mother City, and spend a few days training with local top athletes and adventurers in the build up to the Triathlon. For the main event the hardy triathletes will swim in the frigid waters of the harbour before cycling and running through and around many of the island's landmarks, including the limestone pits where prisoners lived and worked. For a unique experience we can also arrange for guests to stay overnight in one of the cells to truly appreciate the scale and isolation of this off-shore heritage site.
- Snorkel and Stand UP Paddle Board with Penguins
From the city of Cape Town we'll whisk guests to the Cape Point Peninsula and to the charming seaside retreat of Simon's Town. Here with a local guide you'll be shown to a small secret beach only accessible to the locals to seek out a rare colony of African Penguins. Due to the nature of the shallow and protected bay and clear waters, on paddle boards guests can get incredible vantage points of the penguins and glide past them with little disturbance. Guests can brave the chilly waters armed with a snorkel and swim alongside the penguins and get a unique perspective of the penguins and their environment.
- Join an anti-rhino poaching team in the Eastern Cape
For an intrepid safari with a twist head to South Africa's scenic Eastern Cape where we can arrange a rare opportunity to help preserve endangered species on a Rhino Conservation Safari. Guests can take part in a four day programme provides an exciting insight into the regions black and white rhinos and their differing behavioural patterns. Along with a team of experts, such as vets and conservationists guests will be given specific roles for the anti-poaching task. Guests will then head into the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, to spot the rhino. They'll then help dart and sedate the mighty animals and then and play their role in administering any further medication, taking measurements for scientific and medical purposes and monitoring the animal whilst under sedation. They will also have an opportunity to drill the rhino horns for the insertion of microchips and perform ear-notching procedures for future identification – both essential tasks to ensure the preservation of these magnificent animals. Guests will then be helicoptered out over the reserve back to their Black Tomato picked luxury lodge.
- Ride out by horseback in the Kalahari and sleep overnight in a private luxury camp out in the middle of the Wilderness
From the stunning base of Tswalu set in the midst of the remote Kalahari Desert we can arrange for guests to take a guided sunset horse ride into the desert to spy the unique wildlife. Guests will reach a luxury camp out-post in the middle of nowhere where they can sundowners and canapés while taking in the panoramic views of open savannahs. From the private viewing deck they'll be able listen to the sounds of the bush as it comes alive at night. The bare-foot luxury camp consists of a large four poster bed, Egyptian cotton bedding, and a unique candle lit bush shower.
- Sand board and quadbike the Atlantic coast
On this adrenaline fueled adventure we take guests out of Cape Town and up the Atlantic coastline to the Atlantis Dune to run through the basics of sand boarding with the stunning view of Table Mountain behind you. Guests will cruise at high-speeds with the ocean laid out in front of them. Guests will then take a high powered guided sand dune quad bike drive up, down and along the face of the dunes to a secluded spot for a picnic lunch.
