HYPR Events & Promotions, with the support of the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB), is producing the XTERRA Guam Off-Road Triathlon (ORT), on Sunday, March 11 beginning at 7:30am at the USO in Piti. Although this is the fourth year for the event, it is in its second year as part of the XTERRA America Tour the worlds largest and most successful off-road triathlon series. Additionally, the XTERRA Guam ORT has been designated as a signature sporting event by GVB for 2007.
The XTERRA Guam combines a 1km swim in the waters just behind the USO in Piti, followed by an 27km mountain bike up Nimitz Hill and into the technical terrain atop Mt. Alutom and then down to Mannengon Hills before returning to the transition point in Piti. The race finishes with a 5k trail run in and around the Piti area.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 overall male and female finishers. 2006 saw Jamie Whitmore, 2004 XTERRA World Champion, completely dominate the field to finish first overall. A distant second was her husband, Courtney Cardenas and right on his heels was local Guam triathlon speedster, 16 year old, Keenan Tydingco. The ever-consistent Jude Baker finished up in third. Second and third place females were Susan Seay and Tara Tydingco. Results and photos can be found at the Guam Triathlon Federation website (www.triathlonguam.com). Look for more heated action this year as Swiss Olympic triathlete and 3 time defending XTERRA Saipan champion Olivier Marceau, Japanese pro Taro Shirato, and British pro Sam Gardner joins Jamie and Courtney along with other international athletes. Its the only Series of its kind in off-road multisport racing, offering more than 50 races in 33 States and the U.S. Territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete for the national championship in Nevada on October 1. For more info visit xterraplanet.com.
