Travel Begins at 40

Want to know how to modernise your travel writing and travel content? The British Guild of Travel Writers is hosting its second Zoom discussion on decolonising travel writing on Tuesday 27th October 2020 at 2pm BST with another excellent panel of writers and experts.

In July, the BGTW hosted a discussion about decolonising travel writing which explored the stereotypes, language and images that often seep into modern travel writing and photography, and why we should be addressing this as an industry.

Now we're taking the discussion to the next level on Tuesday 27th October at 2pm-3.30pm BST with a Zoom panel discussion and Q&A exploring how we can improve our content. Which words and phrases are problematic, how does travel photography exacerbate outdated tropes, and how else can travel content better respect and represent the places we visit?

Whether it's a long read, a top ten listicle, photo feature, travel marketing copy, or a radio or TV show, the language and images we use hold great sway over the way we present the destinations to readers and audiences. This refreshing debate will provide examples and ideas of how we can all play our part in making travel content better, more engaging, and true to the destinations we write about.

We have a top panel of writers, experts and pioneers:

Travis Levius, freelance writer, editor and tourism consultant with bylines in Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, CNN Travel, The Telegraph and Lonely Planet; Shivani Ashoka, travel writer and diversity advocate, published in Conde Nast Traveller (UK & US), The Times, The Independent, The Telegraph and Tatler; Bani Amor, a travel writer who has frequently spoken and written about decolonising travel culture, with work in CNN Travel, Fodor's, AFAR, and Teen Vogue; Ella Paradis, founder and editor-in-chief of The Black Explorer magazine, a new digital and print publication aiming to amplify the Black narrative in travel; and Tharik Hussain, travel journalist and author who specialises in Islamic culture and heritage, and is the creator of Britain's first Muslim heritage trails; Chaired by Meera Dattani, travel writer, editor and BGTW events director.

The event is free for BGTW members and £6 for non-members including a recording (even if you cannot attend on the day). All information on this link https://bgtw.org/decolonising-travel-writing-2/
