One of London's most famous landmarks was brought to attention last night by the Belgian Tourist Office-Brussels and Wallonia when spectacular images were projected onto Wellington Arch to mark the 100 day countdown to the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium next June.
The re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo will take place this year from 18-21 June. It will be one of the biggest re-enactments ever to take place in Europe, with over 6,000 re-enactors, some 300 horses and 100 canons.
The projections onto Wellington Arch, which consisted of still and moving images of previous re-enactments at Waterloo, coincided with a reception at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel, which overlooks Wellington Arch and Apsley House, still home to the Dukes of Wellington today,
The reception was also organised by the Belgian Tourist Office-Brussels & Wallonia. It was attended by members of the press, representatives of the Waterloo Battlefield site, Waterloo 200, and Project Hougoumont, and a number of re-enactors from different regiments that will deploy to Waterloo next June.
The latest Bradt Guide to “Waterloo & Beyond” was also officially launched at the event. It contains dozens of key sites, memorials and monuments to discover, not only on the battlefield site, but also in the lovely area surrounding Waterloo.
The projections took place with the kind permission of English Heritage. Built in 1825-27, Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner was intended as a proclamation of Wellington's victories over Napoleon. The Arch is surmounted by the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, depicting the angel of peace descending on the four-horsed chariot of war.
