Beirman and Hannaford to address Crisis Management Workshop - 9 July 2002

ANTOR

Tourist offices, wholesalers, airlines and cruise lines are often called upon to respond to a crisis in their destination country or region and to develop and implement a marketing recovery strategy.

Whilst terrorism and war are the issues which most readily come to mind, there are others such as natural disaster, epidemics such as foot and mouth disease in the UK , AIDS in SE Asia and criminal acts or crime waves which have impacted on the marketability of tourism destinations.

The workshop will be led by Dr David Beirman who in his capacity as Director of the Israel Tourism Office has had long term first hand experience in managing Israel's ongoing tourism crisis. This experience forms part of his book "Restoring Tourism Destinations in Crisis" which is about to be published by Allen & Unwin and contains 11 international case studies of tourism crises.

David's presentation will examine the critical issues of how destination authorities manage the in-crisis and post-crisis marketing and management of those events and circumstances which form the greatest challenges.

Other speakers will include Sharon Hannaford, former Executive Director PATA and former Director of SATOUR, who will outline IATA's approach to crisis management and comment on destination crisis management in the Asia Pacific region.

Since September 11 the issue of crisis management has become one of the most important issues facing tourist authorities and an area in which other sectors of the tourism industry, especially the airline industry have been far in advance of national, state and regional tourism authorities. No sector of our industry can afford to neglect this issue as even the most benign destination can be struck by an unexpected event which can compromise its appeal to tourists.
