Are you the modern type? This one's for you then: The Bauhaus exhibition project “Big Plans! Applied Modernism in Saxony-Anhalt 1919-1933” in Dessau and six further locations shows how Saxony-Anhalt was a centre of modernism between 1919 and 1933. Go on a journey of discovery through the region, starting in Dessau's UNESCO Bauhaus building, hosting the “Big Plans! Modern Figures, Visionaries and Inventors“ exhibition until 6 January 2017, and explore Saxony-Anhalt on the design trail with partner exhibitions in Halle, Magdeburg, Merseburg, Leuna, Elbingerode and Quedlinburg.
Preparing for the Bauhaus centenary
“Big Plans!” is part of a three-year programme of exhibitions, events and publications which lead up to the 2019 Bauhaus centenary. In the run-up to 2019, which will also see the opening of a new Bauhaus museum in Dessau, and ninety years after the Bauhaus first opened its doors in Dessau, “Big Plans!” is now the first project to demonstrate that the Bauhaus was not only a forum for the international avant-garde but part of a large, Modernist utopia. It shows that the Bauhaus Dessau did not stand alone but was associated with numerous other utopias, places, institutions and people in Saxony-Anhalt who had imaginative plans for the “New Man” who lives in a modern way and learns that life is shaped more by design than by tradition.
Diverse and experimental exhibits throughout Saxony-Anhalt
Visitors can expect playful and exploratory displays that convey the experimental nature of applied modernism in Saxony-Anhalt with historical and re-staged models, such as the model of an allotment garden for the self-sufficient city dweller by Leberecht Migge and Leopold Fischer, photographs and originals of graphic designs and art, and clothes for the “new woman” by Lis Beyer-Volger and Benita Otte. As a journey of discovery through Saxony-Anhalt, “Big Plans!” moves beyond the Bauhaus building in Dessau and introduces visitors to the region's towns of modernism with installations and exhibitions in Magdeburg, Halle, Merseburg, Leuna, Elbingerode or Quedlinburg, including on advertising, architecture, photography or textile art.
