"Barrack Street - A Time to Reminisce" Exhibitions Opens Monday

Heritage Perth

As part of the City of Perth Winter Arts Season, Heritage Perth, in conjunction with the State Library of WA, is proud to present “Barrack Street - A Time to Reminisce”.

This is a fascinating interactive exhibition that will take you on a winter’s journey into our past and look back on the history of one of Perth’s most favoured meeting places, Barrack Street.

With its buildings dating back to the 1800’s, the exhibition includes rarely seen photographs, self-guided tour material, talks by published author and Fellow of the Royal West Australian Historical Society Ruth Marchant James OAM and Heritage Perth Executive Director Richard Offen and a memory wall for visitors to share their memories of this popular street.

Named after an adjacent parade ground and barracksbuilt in 1829 for the soldiers of the 634rd regiment, the street has a multifarious past that is at time enchanting, dark, curious and down-right odd.  Just as were the myriad characters that helped form this important street in our city.

From the boot importers, an Oyster Saloon, the Sherriff and Lunacy Offices, seed and plant merchants, confectioners, fruiters, and the Albany Bell Tea Rooms (started by  caterer and philanthropist Peter Albany Bell, famed for bringing the milkshake to Perth), this exhibition will reveal the personal and public history of the street, its buildings and the people behind the facades.
