Backyard Travel

Bangkok, Thailand – Backyard Travel, the online boutique travel agency specializing in unique, insider tours throughout Asia, today announced a new tour that explores Malaysian Borneo's diverse culture and unique customs.

Malaysian Borneo is a recent addition to Backyard Travel's destination portfolio and on their new ten-day, nine-night tour travellers are given a myriad of opportunities to discover the island's unique culture in addition to its famed natural attractions.

Whilst the tour includes visits to pristine island beaches and jaw-dropping wilderness preserves, where orangutans swing from looming trees, the most exceptional experiences are arguably the opportunities' to venture deep into the jungle, experience indigenous life, and learn the secrets to the island's delicious cuisine.

Travellers will stay with a host family deep in the jungle, working alongside the indigenous villagers as they fish and farm, and then visit a thrivingBidayuh tribal community, home to one of the few remaining traditional longhouses in Sarawak. Here they'll sit down with the villagers and be treated to a distinctive Bidayuh meal which consists of produce only found in the rainforest, such as tapioca leaves and exotic fruit and vegetables.

The in-depth tour also takes in the cities of Malaysian Borneo. In multicultural Kuching travellers can wander the narrow old streets, discover grandiose examples of British colonial architecture, and take in the delicate aromas of a Bornean spice market. Whilst in Kota Kinabalu they'll be able to delve into colourful seaside markets, before testing their own culinary skills on a personalized cooking class.

“When many think of Borneo, they think of the pristine rainforest and extraordinary wildlife, but we wanted to offer a tour that lets travellers discover the island's unique culture as well,” said Backyard Travel's General Manager, Maeve Nolan. “By providing guided visits to indigenous communities, as well as cultural city tours and jungle expeditions this new tour is ideal for those travellers interested in getting under the surface of Borneo”.
