This summer the breathtaking island of São Miguel in the Azores will open its doors for Walk&Talk, the archipelago’s exciting and third annual international public arts festival (12-27 July).
Set to entice ‘up and coming’ talent, renowned artists and art enthusiasts from around the world, visitors will discover the Azores’ growing international arts scene as well as an eclectic mix of art works from around the world.
The streets of the island’s capital, Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande and for the first time, Lagoa, will come alive with colour and vibrant international art. ‘New talent’ and renowned artists will showcase public art exhibitions which take advantageof the Azores’ breathtaking natural environment and buildings through mural paintings, installations, sculptures, dance, music, video, artistic performances, workshops and debates.
Renowned artists including the Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, American installation artist Mark Jenkins, Okuda and REMED are among fans of the Azores’ art scene who have previously participated in the festival with their own artworks.
In previous years the festival has attracted more than 80 visionary artists and designers from over nine countries and three continents. Thanks to the success of the festival in previous years, São Miguel now has a public art museum, where travellers can enjoy works by over 62 contemporary artists.
The festival was founded in 2011 by two young Azoreans, Diana Sousa and Jesse James, and aims to showcase the archipelago’s exciting art scene and the Azores as an international destination for art tourism. Walk&Talk is based on an artistic residency model that encourages creation in permanent dialogue with public space, and this year, the festival promises yet more exciting and bold creations.

Editor’s Notes:
The nine islands of the Azores are in the middle of the North Atlantic and belong to Portugal. They can be reached by direct flight from the UK in less than four hours from April – October, or via Lisbon. These volcanic islands are renowned for their volcanic craters, beautiful lakes, stunning sea, thermal pools and mountain vistas, their impressive flora and fauna and marine life. The islands have played a hugely important part in European maritime history, due to their strategically significant position as the western most point of Europe.
