The Austrian National Tourist Office and the Tirol Tourist Board bring the Alpine winter to London Waterloo, with a little help from some friends.
Britain's busiest railway station was transformed into an Austrian winter wonderland on Friday 28th October as commuters were invited to have their photo taken on an authentic Tirolean chairlift. By uploading their pictures on social media using #skiWaterloo they could enter a competition to win one of two holidays to either Tirol's “Ski Jewel” Alpbachtal Wildschönau or the glamorous resort of Kitzbühel in Tirol. 360˚ videos brought guests even closer to the winter action, allowing them to experience a virtual ski-run in Austria.
Public favourite “Eddie the Eagle” was a special ambassador for the event, giving radio interviews the day before and available for selfies amidst the activities at London Waterloo. Outdoor clothing specialist Ellis Brigham and the Ski Club of Great Britain further helped promote the day.
“Austria hosted a record number of British skiers on its slopes in the 2015/16 season”, explained Ralph Strampfer, director of the Austrian National Tourist Office UK. “501,000 Brits went on a winter holiday to Austria last year, the majority of which chose a ski holiday. With our cross-media marketing collaborations we hope to further draw attention to the advantages of Austria as a winter destination.”
Who better to team up with than Tirol? “Also known as the Heart of the Alps, Tirol is the Brits' favourite ski resort” said Josef Margreiter, CEO of the Tirol Tourist Board. “We hope this exciting promotion will drive even further interest in the internationally most sought-after alpine holiday country.”
