Australians Enjoy Smoasting on Social Media When on Holiday

Nearly 50 per cent of Australians make travel plans by emulating their friends’ holidays from posts in their social media community, and compete for the ultimate holiday destination and accommodation.

In the lead up to the silly season, Toga Hotels survey reveals that one-third of Australians use social media on holidays because they secretly enjoy boasting to their online communities (‘smoasting’). A lot of this ‘smoasting’ happens through the use of images, with one-third of 35-44 year olds regularly posting photos of their accommodation while on holiday.

Emma Fraser, Group Director of Marketing at Toga Hotels says: “The research undertaken by Toga Hotels suggests that people aren’t as inclined to relax, take off their watch and lose track of everyday life while they’re on holiday.  It just shows that the definition of a holiday has changed, Australians now prefer to stay online and connected at all times.”

When asked how they would feel about leaving their Wi-Fi devices at home, almost one in two Australians (45 per cent) said they would feel very anxious about arriving at their destination without it. Forty per cent of Australians admit people spend too much time worrying about their social media posts than actually enjoying their holiday.
