Australian adventure travel company, Aurora Expeditions, has pledged a $15,000 donation to support three-time Everest summiteer, Tashi Tenzing’s Nepal Green Tara Foundation, which aims to fight poverty and stop the trafficking of young girls to India through the development and promotion of education throughout regional Nepal.
The donated funds will assist Tenzing and his foundation to pay the teacher’s salaries at the foundation-built schools for an entire year.
“Our teachers are a fundamental part of the foundation’s work and the additional funds donated by Aurora Expeditions will be vital to ensure the foundation can continue to work towards its goals and eliminate poverty within these remote regions of Nepal.” said Tashi Tenzing.
“It is so important that we work to create a friendly and sustainable environment for the people of Nepal’s mountain regions to help preserve the way in which they live as well as their unique culture. “
Travellers who join Aurora Expeditions and Tashi Tenzing on the relatively gentle ‘Classic Everest Trek’ through the Himalayan region of Nepal will have the opportunity to see the foundation’s efforts in action, visiting local villages and classrooms of cheerful Sherpa children.
Other highlights include rhododendron and pine-scented forests, wilderness of rock and ice, ancient monasteries and Sherpa villages, including the home of Tashi’s grandfather ‘Tenzing Norgay’ who was the first man to reach Mt Everest Summit with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953.
The trek consists of three to five hour daily treks, including regular stops to ensure plenty of time to take in the spectacular vistas, including that of Mt Everest, and to enjoy delicious meal breaks. Each evening is spent in custom-built Nepalese lodges featuring private rooms with en suite and a three-course homemade meal.
The 13-day ‘Classic Everest Trek’ fully-inclusive package departs in April, May and September 2014 with just 16 trekkers per departure and is priced at US$5250 per person. The package includes airport transfers, four nights in Kathmandu plus sightseeing tour, and the 9-day trek which includes all accommodation, meals, return flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, scenic helicopter flight from Kongde to Lukla, trekking bag, porter and guiding services.
Aurora Expeditions introduced their range of small-group trekking adventures to Nepal in conjunction with Tenzing in 2012 to provide their adventurous clients a ‘soft’ comfort trekking option in the region. Since then the program has expanded to also include trekking holidays to Bhutan and Patagonia.
