Augusta Canal Boat Trips are a Hit

Destination Augusta

Canal Boat Tours have become so popular, the tours are now offered daily during summer hours.

Regularly scheduled tours of the Augusta Canal began in early October in 2003 when the Henry Cumming, the first of the two Petersburg Boat replicas, made its maiden voyage. The Henry Cumming and the William Phillips are each fiberglass vessels designed to carry 49 passengers on narrated tours of the Augusta Canal. Petersburg Boats once hauled cargo along the canal and Savannah River during most of the 19th Century.

There are two narrated tours to choose from, one lasting approximately 50 minutes and the other around 2 hours. The first tour takes passengers past some well known and lesser known historic sites including the Confederate Powderworks Chimney, Archibald Butt Memorial Bridge, and Meadow Garden, home of Declaration of Independence signer George Walton. The longer tour includes those sites as well as the Canal Headgates, where the Augusta Canal begins from the Savannah River.

Tour tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors over 55 and military, and $4 for students and children. Tour tickets may be purchased in combination with admission to the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center or separately. In addition, groups of 20 or more may schedule special charters at other times of the day and week.

The Canal Interpretive Center and boat docks are located at Enterprise Mill, 1450 Greene Street. For further information call 706-823-7089.
