Audley can suggest many different ways to get clients off the beaten track. For those wanting a truly remote experience but still with an element of luxury then they recommend the following:
Crystalbrook Lodge, Australia
Hidden in the rugged outback of North Queensland, Crystalbrook Lodge is an oasis of luxury perched over the spectacular Crystalbrook Lake and caters for just ten guests. It is a 40 minute flight from Cairns and part of the historic 85,000 acre Crystalbrook Station. The lake is a haven for a staggering range of wildlife including birds, freshwater crocodiles and fish. Guests can spend their days on the lake or riverside, exploring the bush wilderness or simply enjoying the serenity and stillness of the lodge's grounds. Keen fisherman can also fish for giant barramundi or go heli-fishing in the gulf rivers. A two week itinerary to include three nights at Crystalbrook Lodge costs from £6,780 per person.
Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica
Getting to Pacuare Lodge is an adventure in itself as most guests will arrive there by rafting down the Pacuare River. This takes you through lush jungle and narrow canyons where tropical trees tower over the riverbank and crystalline waterfalls plummet out of the greenery. Once there, other activities on offer include horse riding, birdwatching, canyoning, a rainforest canopy tour or a trek to visit a Cabecar Indian community. All these adventures are complemented by a spa and gourmet candlelit dinners. A ten day itinerary to Costa Rica including three nights at Pacuare Lodge costs from £2,250 per person.
Greystoke Mahale, Tanzania
Greystoke sits on the edge of Lake Tanganyika with just six double bandas that have the spectacular rainforest and mountains behind them and stunning views over the lake and its white sand beach. The natural rainforest is a wonderful place to wander in and also has the advantage that it is one of the few places where you can go chimp tracking - it is a rare privilege to be able to sit and watch the chimps go about their daily lives - feeding, squabbling, foraging, grooming and playing. Other activities include fishing from the old wooden dhow or taking a kayak out on the lake.
There are no roads within 60 kilometres of camp so the only access is via a flight from Arusha to a small airstrip from where it is a 90 minute trip by dhow over the lake to Greystoke. A ten night trip combining four nights at Greystoke with three nights viewing big game at Katavi costs from £5,500 per person.
Yoshigaura, Japan
The Noto Peninsula in Japan feels like an entirely different world from the rest of the country. Time seems to have stood still and it is about as remote and untouched as you can get in this region of central Japan. Audley recommend Yoshigaura (Lamp no Yado) Onsen - an ancient property that is nestled in the cliff face and surrounded by forests, sweeping down to the water's edge. It is a hot spring spa and the rooms have a terrace straight onto the sea, with your own private outdoor bath. A ten night trip to Japan with three nights at Yoshigaura costs from £5,500 per person.
Karawari Lodge, Papua New Guinea
Karawari Lodge stands majestically on a lone ridge amidst a vast expanse of dense tropical lowland rainforest which extends beyond the horizon in every direction. It is Arambakcountry - one of the most remote and unspoilt areas of Papua New Guinea with the Karawari River and the lodge's private airstrip your only ways in or out. Stilted villages line the edges of flooded waterways and dugout canoes are the primary mode of transport. There are no roads, no shops and no phones. Sepiks live completely off the land.
From Karawari you can visit surrounding villages and see traditional homes and witness ceremonial dances and celebrations. The tropical lowland rainforest is one of earth's most complex of habitats, housing an immense variety of flora and fauna - a staggering 229 different bird species have been recorded at Karawari. A two week trip to Papua New Guinea to include three nights at Karawari Lodge costs from £6,875 per person.
Ladakh, India
Situated in the far north of India over 3,500 metres up on the high plateau, Ladakh is one of the most picturesque places on earth. It has a high altitude desert dominated by rugged snow-capped mountains and deep turquoise lakes. The best way to see it is on foot and Audley have teamed up with Shakti Himalaya to offer village walks staying in traditional village houses. Alternatively , for the more active walker , they suggest trekking and luxury camping in beautiful remote locations. A ten day trip to include seven nights walking between village houses costs from £4,750 per person.
