The 1st Vermont Antique Ski Race at Ascutney Mountain Resort on March 13 was a huge success, not to mention lot's of fun. Racers donned ski wear and equipment from days gone by and gallantly navigated the slalom race course set on Screaming Eagle, Ascutney's race trail. Representatives from the Vermont Ski Museum including Andrea Mead, Vermont's first to win a gold medal in the 1952 Olympics and Olympic silver medalist Billy Kidd were excited for the 1st ever Vermont Antique Ski Race. Curator Meridith Scott, of the Vermont Ski Museum, was pleased with the turnout and was inspired by the enthusiasm of the organizers, and actually won a medal herself. Spectators and competitors finished the day promising to be back next year with even more "antiques" and ski memorabilia.
The day was complete with an awards ceremony where medals were hung around the necks of those racers with the fastest times of the day in either the Woodie division which was won on a pair of Sears & Roebuck wooden skis or the Fiberglass and Metal division which was won on a pair of Head Standards. Of course speed wasn't the only criteria, there were awards for fun categories as well. Results below:
