06 Jun 2005
Wilderness Safaris' new camp, Pafuri, will be opening in early June 2005 in the Makuleke concession of Kruger National Park, one of the few true wilderness areas left in South Africa. To mark the opening Africa specialist, Rainbow Tours (Tel 020 7226 1004 www.rainbowtours.co.uk ) will offer 4 nights for the price of 3 on departures up to the end of August. With the special offer, four nights cost 360 (a discount of 120) per person sharing, including full board, tourism levy, guided game drives and game walks.
The new camp is situated between the Limpopo and the Luvuvhu Rivers in the extreme north of the Kruger National Park, in a 24,000 hectare area. It is the only camp accessible to self-drivers in the extreme northern sector of the Park - a most diverse and scenically attractive area of the Park.
Although the Makuleke people were evicted from their ancestral home in 1969 when this area was incorporated into Kruger Park, they won back their land as part of the restitution process. Rather than move back on to the land, however, they chose to develop the area for tourism. Today the new camp is a co-operative development between Wilderness Safaris and the Makuleke.
The 20 tented rooms with en-suite facilities, including six family rooms with an additional bedroom, are shaded and raised on decks. Guests dine under a canopy of majestic ebony trees and can cool off in the large swimming pool.
Choose from walking safaris, game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles, night drives, birding walks, specialist safaris on the history, palaeontology and archaeology of the area, even guided mountain biking.
