Andy Warhol Pops Up In St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida

Visit St. Pete - Clearwater

In addition to its impressive collection of original artworks by Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí, St. Pete/Clearwater's iconic Dalí Museum will host a new exhibit showcasing the works of Andy Warhol from 18 January - 27 April 2014.

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Warhol was a leading figure in the pop art movement whose works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that was rife in the 1960s.

Entitled 'Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality.', the unique exhibit will include approximately 35 paintings, 20 drawings, 50 photographs and a selection of films by the American artist, on loan from The Warhol Museum in Pennsylvania. Photos of and by Warhol will be displayed as well as portraits of artists and celebrities that he worked with, including a vibrant blue silkscreen of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

A special film installation in the form of a simulated Warhol screen-test will provide visitors with their '15 minutes of fame', enabling them to capture, save and share a minute-long film of themselves online.

"It's important for the Dalí Museum to present works from other artists, especially those that relate to Salvador Dalí like Andy Warhol," said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of the Dalí Museum. "Both artists were fascinated by the culture of their time which provided great inspiration for their works, and both were adept at experimenting with new forms and bringing new media into their art, such as video. Dalí in fact is featured in one of Warhol's famous screen-test films, which will be part of the new exhibit," he continued.

Entry to the exhibit is included in the admission price for the Dali Museum which costs £12.80 ($21) per adult. Concessions are available for students, children and seniors over 65 years old.

Occupying a prime position on downtown St. Pete's sunny waterfront, the Dalí Museum houses a 2,000-piece permanent collection, the largest outside of Spain, featuring eight of his so-called masterworks, nearly 100 oil paintings, over 100 watercolours and drawings, 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures, and objets d'art. The museum building is a masterpiece in its own right that embodies Dali's inimitable imagination - a free-form geodesic dome comprising 1,062 triangular shaped glass panels, it's the only structure of its kind in North America.

The Dalí Museum is located at One Dalí Boulevard in St. Pete/Clearwater, a sun-drenched peninsula on Florida's West Coast, boasting an annual average of 361 days of sunshine and 35 miles of white-sand beaches. Just 30 minutes from Tampa International Airport, the destination's blend of beautiful beaches, world-class culture and a semi-tropical climate makes it the perfect destination for families, couples and singles.
