AMILLA MALDIVES ACHIEVES EARTHCHECK SILVER CERTIFICATION

Baa Atoll resort, a Manta Trust Responsible Operator, recognised for innovative sustainability practices

Forward-thinking five-star island resort Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences has achieved a silver certification from world-leading environment benchmarking programme, EarthCheck, after more than two years' tireless commitment to revolutionising its sustainability practices. Innovative initiatives introduced since the start of the pandemic range from rainwater collection, energy and waste reduction projects and growing fresh produce on-island to supply the resort kitchens; to producing and bottling desalinated, mineralized water on-site. Most recently, Amilla Maldives teamed up with NGO the Manta Trust to become an official Manta Trust Responsible Operator, committing to do even more to help protect the manta and mobula rays that inhabit the Baa Atoll Marine Biosphere Reserve.

Amilla Maldives' Sustainability and Wellness Manager, Victoria Kruse, took on the challenge of making Amilla sustainable in 2019. Two years down the line, Kruse is delighted to see the team's hard work bear fruit: “The EarthCheck Silver certification recognises the concerted efforts the whole Amilla team has made over the past two years in devising, committing to and implementing the many sustainability initiatives we have put in place. As the resort's first-ever Sustainability and Wellness Manager, I could not be more proud of our team in supporting these measures, both the ones we've achieved and those planned in the future. Sustainability and reducing the impact on our environment can only come from a whole team effort, and this EarthCheck certification is an important external recognition of all their hard work."

One of the biggest challenges in a tropical island environment is the sustainable management of waste. To address this, Amilla Maldives constructed a new waste processing facility nicknamed 'The UN' (short for 'UNdo the Harm in the World') to sort all of the island's waste, identifying much of it for recycling. Amilla has also made significant inroads in reducing the volume of waste by making simple changes that guests could easily replicate at home - for example bulk purchasing to reduce packaging, and sourcing compostable alternatives for everyday products like pot scrubbers and vacuum pack bags. Next up on the Amilla Islanders sustainability drawing board is a solar outdoor lighting project, which launches soon.

Victoria was also the brains behind the resort's groundbreaking signature Wellness Your Way concept, which offers guests a comprehensive variety of vegan/vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and keto/paleo/low-carb wellness dishes featuring fresh produce grown on-island in Amilla's new organic and hydroponic gardens.

About Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences

A large, verdant natural island in the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences is an enchanting space for families, friends and couples to roam and play. Most of its 67 Villas and Residences are gracefully elevated over crystal clear waters; to venture through the island's white sand fringe into its shaded heart reveals a surprisingly wild, green place – the inspiration for its organic garden-to-table concept. The resort's Homemade@Amilla and Homegrown@Amilla initiatives are manifestations of a heartfelt commitment towards sustainability and resourcefulness. Indigenous ingredients - sea almonds, screwpines, countless coconuts, fragrant frangipani - are celebrated alongside the homemade, homegrown and homebrewed, bringing personality and vigour to nutritious, immunity-boosting menus. While not strictly a wellness resort, embracing dietary lifestyles is an intuitive part of Amilla's Wellness Your Way, a fresh, holistic and highly customised approach to wellness that encompasses nutrition, mindfulness, movement and spa.
