Award-winning guesthouse Almohalla 51 (+34 952 716 370; almohalla51.com) has launched “Andalucia: The Roads Less Travelled”, an insider's tour that takes guests off the tourist trail for an authentic experience of this popular region of Spain.

The self-guided tour poses lesser-known destinations as intriguing alternatives to Andalucia's top draws. For example, Alhama de Granada, which has Arab baths alike its more famous local namesake Granada, as well as a heady gorge to rival nearby Ronda. Meanwhile, the cobbled streets of Antequera lead to a Moorish castle that overlooks the plains of Cordoba, and the town is also home to ancient dolmens that are currently in the running for Unesco World Heritage status.

Almohalla 51, a five-room guesthouse in Archidona, the old Moorish capital of the Malaga region, has created special itineraries to guide visitors through these backwaters. Along the way, they will experience a more traditional, community-oriented Spain, where tourism isn't high on the agenda but where strangers are still welcomed. The information also includes directions, helpful tips on where to park, and favourite places to eat and drink. The self-guided tour package will be available in spring and autumn.

“Andalucia: The Roads Less Travelled” includes four nights' B&B at a discounted rate, the exclusive self-guided itineraries, and a copy of Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra, the 19th-century classic about his journey from Seville to Granada on horseback, taking in many of the towns on the trail. From €300 (£212) in a standard room and €350 (£247) in a superior room – prices are per room, based on two sharing. Available 1 March-1 June (excluding 22-28 March) and 11 September-1 November 2016.

Almohalla 51 – TripAdvisor's Best B&B in Spain in 2014 – is a five-room guesthouse set across two renovated townhouses. Owners David Matthews and Myles Rainford employed the help of local craftsmen to restore a sense of traditional elegance to the re-imagined space, with whitewashed walls, exposed wooden beams and stone-tiled floors, adding modern touches such as the sleek, contemporary bathrooms in each of the suites.

Guests also have access to comfortable communal areas, one with a woodburning stove, as well as shaded patios. One terrace has been put to use as a sunny setting for the fresh breakfasts of local produce, as well as a romantic vantage point for sundowners. The upper terrace has a pool with a sun terrace positioned to make the most of the views across the town to the surrounding countryside.

Notes to editors:

David Matthews and Myles Rainford, who are originally from London, opened Almohalla 51 in their adopted home of Spain in summer 2012. With backgrounds in travel and marketing, but with no experience of running a hotel or a business, they decided to turn their hands to creating stylish, child-free lodgings that would also deliver the high standards of service and hospitality they had come to expect on their extensive travels around the world.
