The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, has once again been named 'Europe's Leading Beach Destination for 2022' at the World Travel Awards.
This is the ninth (and eighth consecutive) time that the destination has won the nomination for this award, with no other destination having won this title so many times.
The Algarve is home to over 100 beaches, with a coastline stretching across 200km. The region stands out for its huge variety of beaches from pretty coves only accessible by the sea, long stretches of golden sand that go on for miles, to beaches framed by dramatic rock formations and cliffs.
The calm waters of the wide east coast beaches are perfect for families and are manned by lifeguards. Beaches found along the Algarve's west coast such as Amado, Bordeira and Monte Clerigo are some of the most scenic and uncrowded in the country and offer fantastic surfing opportunities.
João Fernandes, President of Algarve Tourism says: “With so much competition for this award we are delighted to win again. Our beaches are clean, safe and beautiful and there are beaches to suit every type of holiday maker in the Algarve.”
