Media are invited to go behind-the-scenes as the Anchorage Museum de-installs the Alaska gallery and moves objects into the new conservation lab and visible storage.

The Anchorage Museum has begun renovations on its popular gallery about the history of Alaska. The new Alaska gallery, opening fall 2017, will showcase the ingenuity, technology, ways of knowing and intimate understanding of the landscape that have allowed people to survive and thrive across the North.

The re-envisioned Alaska gallery will present the past as it informs the present – to be understood together through a series of key themes, including people, the landscape, adaptation, cold, boom and bust, and Alaska's strategic position in the world.

While the Alaska gallery undergoes renovation, the Anchorage Museum will transform several first-floor galleries into visible storage and a conservation lab. Visitors will be able to see what's normally behind-the-scenes, learn about the new Alaska gallery and have the opportunity to discuss objects in the Anchorage Museum's collection.

Due to the sensitive nature of moving historical and cultural objects and the timeline for the gallery renovations, Aug. 10 will be the only scheduled time for media to observe the de-installation of the Alaska gallery. The visible storage and conservation lab will have programming and additional media opportunities through fall 2017.

Interested media should RSVP to Laura Carpenter, lcarpenter@anchoragemuseum.org or 907-929-9227. High resolution images available for media at https://www.anchoragemuseum.org/media/press-releases/alaska-gallery-de-installation/.
