Ajijic Named Mexico's Newest Magical Town

Jalisco Tourism

The state of Jalisco is proud to be home to nine Magical Towns after the colorful lakeside town of Ajijic received the designation on December 1. Magical Towns are recognized by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism for their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, and outstanding hospitality. Only two states, Puebla and Mexico which boast 10 Magical Towns each, have more. Ajijic joins Tequila, Tlaquepaque, San Sebastian del Oeste, Lagos de Moreno, Mazamitla, Talpa de Allende, Tapalpa, and Mascota as Magical Towns in Jalisco.

The government of Jalisco has dedicated US$1.8 million since 2018 to support the preservation of the unique cultural heritage of its Magical Towns and empower communities living there. As the birthplace of iconic Mexican traditions like tequila, mariachi, and charrería – Mexico's national sport – Jalisco has long been committed to maintaining the connection to its roots and thoughtfully using its heritage to attract visitors from throughout Mexico and the world.

Located one hour south of Guadalajara, Ajijic is known for its proximity to Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico, with one of the world's best climates. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre Mountains, travelers enjoy beautiful boat rides on the lake, long walks along the waterfront promenade, and time spent in hot springs warmed by volcanic magma. The Mexican town and ideal climate attract snowbirds and expats alike with Ajijic home to Mexico's largest expat population.

About Jalisco
Located in western Mexico, the state of Jalisco is the birthplace of many of Latin America's greatest cultural treasures including tequila, mariachi, and the national sport of charrería (Mexican rodeo). Jalisco's diverse topography ranges from scenic mountains to arid agave fields, cosmopolitan urban centers, and world class beaches stretching more than 200 miles along the Pacific coast. Guadalajara, Jalisco's capital and the second largest city in Mexico, exquisitely balances modernity and tradition with world-class cuisine, contemporary arts, and a rich cultural heritage. Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations, offers fun in the sun on a stunning shoreline; and the up-and-coming Costalegre region is known for its picturesque beaches, capes, and bays and upscale bohemian chic vibe.

Jalisco is also home to nine Magical Towns, as designated by the Mexico Ministry of Tourism. Selected for their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, arts and crafts and hospitality, Jalisco's Magical Towns include Tequila and the surrounding blue agave fields (a UNESCO World Heritage Site); the artisan-centric Tlaquepaque; and San Sebastián del Oeste, known for its UNESCO World Heritage historic center and production of raicilla.

Travel to Jalisco is easily accessible via two international airports: Miguel Hidalgo International Airport (GDL) in Guadalajara and Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) in Puerto Vallarta. Both have daily direct flights available from major cities across the United States. For more information, please visit https://visitjalisco.com.mx/.
