Recent research from ABTA* has revealed surprising statistics regarding the number of holidaymakers travelling abroad uninsured, with 24% of travellers (and nearly half of 15 to 24-year-olds) holidaying without travel insurance. One of the reasons given for doing so was the belief that travel insurance is too expensive, so Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) has put together a comprehensive guide at www.aph.com/travelinsurance, comparing the cost of the major UK travel insurance companies.

The research compares 22 of the most popular travel insurance companies in the UK, including Aviva, Bupa and Virgin, highlighting the difference between the cost for single trips and annual trips both in Europe and worldwide.

With regards to insurance policies for a single trip to Europe, the most affordable option is the Bronze package available with Columbus at a cost of £7.11. This is closely followed by the Standard packages available with Essential Travel and Elephant at £9.06 and £9.07 respectively, and the Red package with Virgin at £9.70. The most expensive was found to be the Premium Cover package with More Than at £40.70; however this does include Baggage and Cancellation cover.

For holidaymakers travelling outside of Europe, the Standard package with Essential Travel is the cheapest option at £11.96. Sainsbury’s Bank’s Basic Travel Insurance package is also affordable at £18.89, when compared to £79.98 for a single trip to the USA with M&S Bank Travel Insurance.

As far as insurance packages for annual trips are concerned, some companies do not charge much more for travellers to insure themselves for a full year, with AA Travel Insurance offering an Essentials Annual package in Europe for only £21.66.  STA Travel Insurance was found to offer one of the most expensive options for Europe at £77.00 for the Under 35 Annual Multi-Trip package, followed by the Black package with Virgin at £76.25.
