With the holiday season fast-approaching and large numbers of motorists planning to set-off on longer journeys, cover against roadside breakdown is a must. To help travellers choose the most suitable, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH.com) has compiled a comprehensive guide comparing the top roadside assistance policies in the UK. The guide is available in the Know Before You Go section of the website at www.aph.com/roadassistance.
The research compares 18 major car breakdown insurance companies including AA, Churchill Breakdown Cover and RAC, highlighting the cost of the individual schemes and what is incorporated in the policy including additional call-out charges, caravan and trailer cover as well as assistance if customers' break-down at home.
With regards to the cost of roadside assistant schemes, prices vary greatly between companies with some significantly more expensive than others. For example, 2gether Insurance and Startrescue.co.uk were found to offer the cheapest roadside assistant schemes, charging £17.50 and £18.30 respectively for their lowest-tier scheme, whereas ETA and GEM Motoring charge £67.59 and £75.62 on their lowest-tier policy. When comparing the highest level of roadside assistance offered by car insurance firms, the research found ETA to be the most expensive at £194.86 for their Premium Plus Scheme and Kwik-Fit the cheapest at £58.90 for their Recovery Plus Scheme.
When discussing benefits offered by car insurance firms, a large proportion offer towing to a nearby garage across all their roadside assistant scheme tiers. However, some are more generous than others with AutoAid and Drive 24-7 both offering assistance if customer's breakdown at home, towing to a nearby garage, no call-out charge and caravan and trailer cover even on their most basic schemes.
Additionally, some roadside assistance policies offer misfuelling cover, including Direct Line, Green Flag and Insurance Choice Breakdown. Motorists will also be pleased to learn that a substantial number of the car insurance firms researched, such as Admiral and GEM Motoring Assist Breakdown Cover, offer overnight accommodation and alternative travel options in the case of a breakdown.
