After The Rain - The Holidays!

Explore France

Sylvia Pinel French Minister for Craft, Business and Tourism is delighted to announce the re-opening of the Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees

Having worked tirelessly over the past few weeks tourism professionals and local services are back to business as usual in the highly popular tourism destinations of the High-Pyrenees. It was feared that many places would not be ready in time to welcome this summer’s visitors following an exceptional rainfall that flooded areas around Lourdes.

The village of Barège that had been isolated for the past month is once again accessible, marking the opening up of the last remaining areas of these beautiful mountains via the Col du Tourmalet road.

Mrs Pinel thanked everyone involved – tourism professionals, inhabitants, farmers, elected officials, local council workers, and road work companies – for their energy, solidarity and reactivity at this time. She especially noted the implication of local government structures that have been able to help bring the tourism offer back up to standard in order to show the area at its best.

Atout France is pleased to announce that many of the well-known and most beautiful sites are now open to tourists once more: the Pic du Midi, the Gavarnie Circus, Col du Tourmalet, Cauterets and the Pont d’Espagne, Lourdes and its holy sites, as well as the lakes, villages and architecture the area is famed for.

The Conseil Général has launched a communication campaign entitled “After the rain – the holidays!” to make the general public aware that there is no need to postpone their stay in the region.
