The 10-day Epic Antarctica voyage run by Chimu Adventures will allow travellers to explore the magic of the Antarctic Peninsula with Samuel, whilst supporting Love Your Sister's mission to raise money for breast cancer research at the Garvan Institute Foundation.
Love Your Sister was founded by Johnson and his sister Connie, who has fought a long battle against breast cancer. Together the pair have raised more than $2.2 million – much of it from Johnson riding more than 15,000km around Australia on a unicycle.
His commitment to the cause was recognised yesterday when Johnson received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to the arts and cancer research.
Johnson said he jumped at the chance to work with Chimu Adventures.
“I wouldn't even let the gang at Chimu Adventures finish their sentence when they suggested we could take a trip to Antarctica as a fundraiser,” he said.
Not one to be known for doing things the easy way, Samuel has pledged to jump into the Southern Ocean in Antarctica following the 'polar plunge' trend where adventurous travellers feel the full wrath of the Antarctic sea conditions against their bare skin.
Samuel will also take his unicycle and will be asking the Love Your Sister 'Village' (as the Love your Sister followers are known) to 'throw a coin in the can for a k' where he will cycle one kilometre for every A$100 raised outside of berth sales and will complete as much as physically possible whilst on the voyage in Antarctica, if time does not permit, the remainder will be done back in Australia.
Greg Carter, Co-director of Chimu Adventures says that working with Research Australia's Advocate of the year is not only an honour but a once-in- a-life-time opportunity for many of his staff at Chimu Adventures, advising that this journey is going to be an event that cannot be repeated.
“Samuel Johnson, is a character larger than life, representing a cause that affects us all, we have no doubt he will add unique magic to Antarctica, an already inspirational destination.”, Greg Said.
