In 2016, national festival celebrations will mark 300 years since the birth of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, one of England's finest – and certainly most famous – landscape designers. ACE Cultural Tours will celebrate the tercentenary year with a brand new tour Capability Brown in Yorkshire: Moving Heaven & Earth, led by the writer, lecturer and photographer Steffie Shields, who specialises in historic landscapes.
Brown's naturalistic style comprehensively re-defined the English landscape, but his architectural inventiveness and engineering acumen is less well known. Through visits, lectures, and informal talks, participants will learn how to 'read' the landscapes that Brown claimed to create with 'a poet's feeling and a painter's eye'. Our itinerary takes in some of Brown's most famous work, at Temple Newsam and Harewood House, as well as lesser-known creations including Sledmere House and Scampston Hall. We shall also enjoy a private visit to Harrogate's Mercer Art Gallery for their special exhibition Noble Prospects: Capability Brown and the Yorkshire Landscape.
ACE Cultural Tours offers departures in the UK and worldwide exploring art, music, and culture in small, friendly groups. An experienced Tour Director guides the group throughout, sharing their knowledge through lectures and site talks as well as more informal discussions over dinner.
