The Departure of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has jumped two places to be voted the world's second most popular landmark by the TripAdvisor Community, behind Machu Picchu in Peru.

In 2015, the Mosque was voted fourth behind Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Taj Mahal in India.

Ola Kay, Abu Dhabi Tourism Country Manager said, ''The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque really is a sight to behold, I'm thrilled travellers are appreciating it so much.

“It is not only a very spiritual place, but also a must see landmark, welcoming visitors every day except Friday during prayer times.

“Architecturally, it is a work of art.  The Mosque features 82 domes, over a 1000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet.

“The reflective pools that surround the Mosque amplify its beauty and the unique lighting at night reflects the phases of the moon.” Ola said today

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one the world's largest mosques, with a capacity for 40,000 worshippers.  The mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.
