A St Helena Blog Is Born

St Helena Tourism

St Helena Tourism marks St Helena Day* with the launch of their first blog, the St Helena Wirebird. The blog aims to inspire travellers and showcase the diversity of this little-known island’s landscapes and experiences through amazing photography, top tips and rich content. Readers will also have the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into what life is like on the island.

Cathy Alberts, Director of Tourism says: “We are thrilled to be launching our first blog. The blog gives St Helena a ‘global’ voice and expands on our current digital offering helping us put the destination firmly on the intrepid travellers map. It will also act as a great resource for travellers looking to come and experience St Helena for themselves.”

The first blog post will showcase some of the fantastic aerial shots taken by photographer Marc Lavaud offering readers a new perspective on this extraordinary destination. The blog, which is named after the island’s endemic bird, will be updated weekly with fresh and engaging content so watch this space.

St Helena Tourism plans to roll out additional social media channels including Google + and Flickr at a later date to complement the blog and an already successful Facebook page.

The remote island of St Helena is located 1,500 miles of the North West Coast of Africa and is currently only accessible by sea but this is all set to change with the completion of the island’s first ever airport in early 2016.

Notes to the Editor *St Helena Day is a national day, celebrating the discovery of the island over 500 years ago.

1. St Helena is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, with its own legislature and a high degree of internal self-government.
2. It is an island of 47 square miles (122 sq.km) situated 1,200 miles off the west coast of Africa.
3. Currently the only access to the Island is by sea, via the ship RMS St Helena, plus a number of cruise ships and yachts.
4. On the 3rd November 2011 the International Development Secretary announced the official go ahead for the airport and appointed South African company, Basil Read (Pty), to design and construct the airport. The airport is scheduled to be completed and operational by early 2016.
