One of the country’s most significant historic buildings, which was virtually destroyed in a devastating Dartmouth fire three years ago, is now available to book for holidays through Blue Chip Holidays.
Located in Dartmouth’s historic centre, this Grade I listed, former 17th century merchant’s house has been painstakingly restored to its former glory, following over £1 million of works.
Teams of archaeologists, master builders and craftsmen employed original techniques and skills to ensure that every historic aspect of the building has been put back in place, creating two sumptuous boltholes of historic significance and elegance, yet with a chic contemporary twist.
Today the building welcomes guests with its richly carved and moulded frieze, where cherubs’ heads peak out from twisting foliage, populated by musicians, soldiers and monsters’ heads.
Divided into two four star platinum graded apartments, connected by a novel twisting newel oak staircase, these unique retreats are now available to be booked for both short breaks and seven night stays.
Merchants Rest, the stylish first floor apartment for three, retains many significant original features including one of the finest examples of a Charles I plaster ceiling in the country, festooned with cherubs and intricate mouldings. This beautifully finished apartment melds old with new cleverly and offers modern living and comfort, yet with all the character of this former 17th century merchant’s house.
Internally, the property has a large open plan living room and dining area with stunning original mullion windows that span the entire length of the room. These cast natural light onto the intricate plaster work, the original fireplace and the chic, high gloss fitted kitchen, creating a light and airy feel. The master bedroom has a large queen-size bed with bathroom next door, and the single bedroom beyond.
Visit over the Dartmouth Food Festival (starts 25 Oct) for a real treat, when three nights costs £461, while a week costs £654. At other times of the year three nights can be booked from £314 while a week can be booked from £433. In peak a week costs £1,159.
Merchants Rise, its sister apartment, is set out over the two upper floors. Original features include a historic fire place, plank and muntin screening, and mullion windows that still bear the charred scars from the flames that nearly destroyed the building.
Sleeping four this beautiful apartment, which has a splendid en-suite master bedroom spanning the entire top floor, can be booked from £336 for three nights and £464 for week. As well as a second en-suite bedroom, a beautifully finished kitchen with high gloss units and a dining area, Merchants Rise has a separate living room with views out over one of the oldest streets in Dartmouth.
Entertainment packages in both apartments include a 30” flatscreen internet enabled TV with Freeview and DVD player. Both apartments have private garaged parking only a short walk away; something of a rarity in Dartmouth.
