20 Aug 2008
Having first opened its doors on 11th December 1928, The Peninsula Hong Kong celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2008. Many new and exciting dining programmes have been created, and will be offered throughout the year.
Hong Kongs oldest and finest French restaurant, Gaddis, which first opened its doors in 1953, will be celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, so its a double celebration! For this momentous occasion, Gaddis Classics, a special six-course menu comprising the restaurants signature dishes throughout the decades has been created. Including a glass of Champagne, Gaddis Classics is available at both lunch and dinner for HK$1,953 per person (subject to 10% service charge). Served from 1st January to 17th December 2008, the la carte menu will also available throughout the year.
On the evening of 18th December 2008, the restaurants actual anniversary, Gaddis will serve a Gala Menu featuring the very best of French produce paired with rare wines. Each guest will also receive a limited edition souvenir, created especially for the evening, so mark your diary now!
AFTERNOON TEA DANCES from March to December
When The Peninsula opened its doors on 11th December 1928, The Lobby was a quiet tea lounge, but it fast became a lively, colourful crossroads of the East (the slogan that was emblazoned on the sugar cube wrappers at the time).
This year, The Peninsula re-creates this lively, colourful atmosphere with the revival of its traditional Afternoon Tea Dances held in The Lobby. From 3pm to 6pm on the first Sunday of each month from March to December, every aspect of The Lobby will be transformed to a past era.
From its waiters and waitresses in period costume to its cigarette girls (who will be selling sweets and chocolate cigars), guests are invited to step back in time with the Peninsula Swings own brand of big band music. In the gilded atmosphere of days gone by, it will be a genteel afternoon of ballroom dancing, accompanied by a delicious Deluxe Afternoon Tea Set, including a glass of Champagne, for HK$498 (subject to 10% service charge) per person. (Advance reservation and prepayment are required.)
Please note the dress code for the Afternoon Tea Dances is Sunday Best (no jeans, flip-flops, beach sandals, plastic footwear or athletic wear. Additionally for gentlemen, full length trousers and collared shirts only, and no sleeveless shirts). We respectfully advise that children under 12 are not permitted at the Afternoon Tea Dances.
For guests who do not wish to join The Lobbys Afternoon Tea Dances, The Peninsula will serve afternoon tea in The Verandah.
The Peninsula Lobby is the one of most elegant meeting places in Hong Kong with marble topped tables, sumptuously comfortable chairs and exclusive Tiffany chinaware.

80TH ANNIVERSARY CULINARY JOURNEY
Each evening from 1st January to 11th December 2008 (the actual birthday of the hotel), the 80th Anniversary Culinary Journey is served. In this six-course dining odyssey around The Peninsula, guests travel the hotel sampling courses at four of its signature restaurants The Lobby, Spring Moon, Gaddis and Felix all in one evening.
The journey begins with a glass of Champagne or guests favourite cocktail and an appetiser in The Lobby. When The Peninsula opened its doors on 11th December 1928, The Lobby was a quiet tea lounge, but it fast became a lively, colourful crossroads of the East (the slogan was emblazoned on the sugar cube wrappers at the time).
After The Lobby, guests may enjoy two courses of Cantonese fare at Spring Moon. First opened in 1986, the restaurant was renovated and re-opened as part of the hotels 70th anniversary celebrations in 1998. Its Art Deco look features Frank Lloyd Wright highlights, and harkens to the era when the hotel first opened.
From Spring Moon, guests progress to Gaddis, The Peninsulas fine dining French restaurant. Having opened on 18th December 1953, the restaurant is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. Named after Leo Gaddi, The Peninsulas General Manager from 1948 to 1960, the restaurant remains one of the very few venues in Hong Kong to dine and dance.
Finally, guests can relax over dessert and coffee or tea in Felix, the brainchild of the world-famous avant-garde designer, Philippe Starck. Built in 1994, its breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon make it the perfect ending.
The 80th Anniversary Culinary Journey is HK$1,928 per person (subject to 10% service charge). Advance reservations and prepayment are required.
Please note the dress code for the 80th Anniversary Culinary Journey is jackets for gentlemen, with ladies dressed similarly (no jeans, flip-flops, beach sandals, plastic footwear or athletic wear. Additionally for gentlemen, full length trousers only and no sleeveless shirts). We respectfully advise that children under 12 are not permitted at the 80th Anniversary Culinary Journey.
For reservations and enquiries, please call 2315 3146, fax: 2315 3140 or e-mail: diningphk@peninsula.com.
CAKES AND COCKTAILS
It would not be a celebration without cakes and cocktails! Throughout the year, The Lobby will serve a slice of cake and coffee or tea for just HK$80 (subject to 10% service charge), from 11am onwards, daily.
The 80th anniversary cakes include: The Peninsulas 80th Anniversary Double Chocolate Cake, available year round Cherry Blossom Spring Cake with Mango and Raspberries served from March to May Lychee, Champagne and Rose Summer Cake served from June to August Autumn Flavours with Caramel, Chocolate and Jasmine Tea served from September to November
Meanwhile, all of the hotels eight bars and restaurants will be serving two celebration cocktails: Pen 80, made with Midori, Blue Curaao and honeydew melon pure, and East of Suez, a refreshing, non-alcoholic blend of citrus juices, plus strawberries, lychees and lime juice. The cocktails are HK$80 each, subject to 10% service charge.
