Press Release

His Majesty's Government, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has decided to grant partial and full waiver on the royalty fees imposed on 60 Himalayans peaks in the Kingdom of Nepal on the occasion of Destination Nepal Campaign 2002-03, Golden Jubilee Celebration on the Successful Ascent to the Mount Everest and International Year of Mountains 2002. His Majesty's Government has declared a concession of 75% on the royalty of 40 less frequented peaks effective from March 2002 to 2005, for a period of 3 years to encourage mountaineering and trekking activities and the government has waived off royalty for three years on 20 peaks falling in the western region in view of Far west being underdeveloped and comparatively lagging behind in tourism activities. The list of the fully and partially waived off peaks is available from the Nepal Tourism Board.

For your kind reference, His Majesty's Government through the Cabinet meeting of December 27, 2001 has decided to provide discount on royalty or waive off royalty fees for a period of 3 years to all the opened up but unattempted peaks and areas.

The Ministry has expected that, to some extent, this provision will help in initiating the process of proportionate development to economically and socially backward areas and making the most competitive mountaineering activities in Nepal more attractive hence increasing the contribution rendered by the mountaineering activities in order to address the problems apparent in the tourism in the last few years.
