Visit South Devon

There's no doubt about it; we all love free experiences, especially those that leave lasting memories, like seeing your first dolphin, discovering a ghost-village or crossing on foot to an Island before the tide rises.

Somehow, not paying for something makes the experience all the more exciting, more invigorating and more memorable.  That's why Visit South Devon has published its 2016 '50 Free Things To Do' guide just in time for the February half term.

The list takes you all around the coast of South Devon and in-land too, so wherever you're staying, there's always something free to do on your doorstep.

You could spot a Sherman Tank from the D-Day trials at Slapton Sands and Torcross.  You could discover the collapsed fishing village at Hallsands, swallowed by the sea overnight.  You could cross at low tide to Burgh Island to explore its chapel ruins.  You could clamber through the smugglers' tunnel at Shaldon to discover the secret on the other side, or you could be mesmerised by magnificent marble runs at the House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey, all without spending a penny.

Commenting on the guide, Sarah Stride, Acting General Manager for Visit South Devon, said: “South Devon is stuffed full of free things to do, many of which are quite spectacular, such as watching the British Firework Championships held on Plymouth Hoe in August, or stargazing on Blackpool Sands where its dark skies amplify the constellations.  There's an array of adventurous things to do too, such as creating a den with the kids at Haldon Hill Forest Park, walking the South West Coast Path, or spending a night wild camping on Dartmoor.

“With 50 things to do, you'll never get bored and because it's all free you can afford to take the family to a host of South Devon's great attractions.  You could even treat them to delicious delights such as a well earned cream tea, a bottle of award-winning Sharpham, or a picnic made up from fresh local produce.”
